Just for you guys that love home runs Papa is going to attempt to arrange a "KING OF SWAT" at one of the state tournaments that should go a long way in letting you guys get a thrill watching the ball leave the yard.
Papa loves a good home run as much as anyone and I will freely admit that I got chill bumps watching my grandson go the distance at Cooperstown with 88 of the best home run hitters in the nation. He didn't win but he was runner-up and even had 4 balls that left the entire stadium going over the back wall. The kid that won was from Prolefic Power out of Ohio and most of his home runs were in the front row but man was he consistent. I saw a kid from TABU hit one as far as I have seen from this age group and of course the 2nd baseman from the Glory and now with the MBA Pride hit several bombs that were a lot of fun to watch.
Who would be interested in helping arrange a Georgia contest and where do you feel the best venue would be. This would be a true home run contest on at least a 200' field so nothing cheap would make it out. |

Even though it is a little small, I think ATPP would be a great venue for many reasons. Not sure if it could be slipped into the scheduling but one of the next TC tourneys (Backyard Brawl or N. Atl Open) would be a great opportunity since there are so many teams participating. Only thing is I am not sure how easily HR balls can be retrieved there.

I think the big Wildcats hitter had 5 or 6 at Slugfest, and those fields are much larger than ATPP's. Sounds like these 2 and the two from the Bandits need to have a slug off. I'm not sure which Chilidog Lawson boy is the top dog, but I'm throwing him into the mix too.

I heard in the ATPP tournament the Rookies had a kid to hit a total of COUNT THEM 5 and a team total of 8 homeruns . They also won the tournament as well. Way to go guys coach Jeff still has alot of work to do but the Rookies seem to be getting better.

Guys, kind of understand the home run excitement. Our kids have hit eleven home runs in the last five games(five different kids) but we try to be tempered by individual accolades.
Papa, I made the mistake and let my son in a home run derby last year, it was against 30 other kids, he won it with 8 home runs with 10 swings, the next two finalists had 1. It took two weeks to level off his swing and of course they did not pitch to him the rest of the tournament. I will not let him in another derby.
I am paying too much money to mess with that swing...lol |

Papa seen all 16 hit in the 5 games the Bandits played this weekend. I also saw at least 20 more hit by other teams. Of course what do you expect when 6 of the top 10 teams in Georgia get together for a little baseball. |

It sounds to me that you all were playing on fields with very short fences. Many of those teams whose kids belted home runs also participated in Atlanta at the Super NIT. How many home runs did they hit at 250 feet?

Yankee Clipper:
The fences were at the same place they were for the other team. But to answer your question about the Super NIT where the fields were 250'. The Bandits were not there due to injuries so I can't answer that question but I can tell you that Centerfield at the 643 field was 225' and several balls went 50 feet over the fence. If you are as good at math as you are criticism then you should be able to figure it out. The kids had fun and that is all that matters. |

Yeah, me too but now that I have had a little time I will just say this. There were lots of balls hit out this weekend and yes I did see some that would have gone the 250ft distance in question. BUT, what is the big deal with an occasional tourney with smaller fences? It adds a little more excitement to the game because more players become a threat. All games were played on the same field which kept things fair for all teams. Also, maybe it gives some of these kids a chance to experience a homerun for the first time which becomes harder to do the older they get. WHO CARES how far the fence was. The boxscore and the kid will both tell you that it still counted!

KoopsDad: Amen to giving the boys who have never hit one out a chance on the smaller fields. I saw 2 boys get their first homers this year, and the joy was just gushing out all over the place!
My son hasn't hit one out since he was 7 (his only 2 came back to back), but this weekend we'll have a short porch...and the new bat arrives today...and he's been taking some hitting lessons. ALL the stars are aligning, and I'm having this tingly feeling. I hope the winds blowing out.
If my son goes yard, I might take out a full page ad in USA Today, or rent a billboard along the Downtown Connector, or maybe put on a Peacock outfit and just strut around the field 100 times. You all would not be able to live with me for a while.
Now, let me tell about the 2 he hit when he was 7...

Bo,
Your son is a great ball player, home run or not. But I do hope the stars align for him this weekend. Whare are you playing? I want to see the peacock suit.
We had a kid put his first ever out a few weeks ago. He had never even put one out in practice. I am sure he looks at that ball every night.

250ft.....I know I personally saw #13 hit one that went over the road behind Larry Bell.....Now I don't know how wide lanes are in Cobb county but I think that shot was way over 250....but even if it wasn't I'd still have to believe it was a thrill for him to hit one that far |

Bmoser, I feel the same way! My son has hit a few out in practice, but not yet in a game. He has bounced a few off the fence, and a couple only needed about a foot to clear. I got my peacock suit ready!
On a side note: does anyone know the distance of the East Cobb fields, 7 & 8? He bounced one off 7 a couple weekends ago very high up. |

I think the criticism stems from consistency. Earlier this season, the fences were too short for a Major 12u tournament when the ECB Braves hit the game winning HR late. And I believe both teams played on the same field then. I don't care one way or the other but you can't have it both ways. |

I alwasy here the distance 239 used, but I don't know if that is from home to the fence or an estimate of how far you have to hit it to get it over the rail on 7 and 8. |

I have seen a few bombs over the past week or so. The ECB Astro's (11u) were palying in a 12u tournament game last weekend and one of their kids hit a shot that cleared the netting over the 225'center field fence which is ~20' high. Also the ECB Stars 11u were playing in the Javy Lopez wood bat tournament the team hit ~ 8 Hrs for the tournament but one kid hit a shot with, the wooden bat, that had to go 275' out of deep center. It cleared the 25' net and went deep into the woods. |

bharbin: I know that North Gwinnett field well. Hitting it over that 25' net with a wood bat is amazing.
qwikslver: If he can hit it up on those EC walls, you need to have your camcorder rolling every at bat now.
DecaturDad: We're at Dobbs Creek Park in Cumming (our teams' home park) hosting a 11u tourney w/ 12 teams (Silver & Gold brackets). 2 fields are 200', the 3rd is 225'. The wind usually blows out on 1 of the 200' fields towards right center, and favors the lefty batters. If he catches one solid & out front, I'll be hunting for the ball in the pine trees.
DD: Thanks for telling your Coach about our tourney and joining in. Its always nice to have I-75 teams. I hope you do well, and have big fun.
11U Rankings: Thanks for the offer. I'll take you up on that if it happens. I visit your site often, and enjoy the rankings and other features.
We've got those Midway Dirty Dawgs tonight, geez, I've seen enough tough teams this season to last me a lifetime.

stinger is right and I still think the fields at Sandy Plains were too short for a 12U Major but the fences are where they are and both teams get a shot at them. You do remember stinger that the Bandits are only 11 years old but we chose to play 12 and that experience might be helping us now. They say that what doesn't kill you will make you stronger so maybe it has made the Bandits a little stronger. I also agree that for the 11U major teams that the 643 porch is a little short but if you could have seen some of the balls hit and the distance they traveled over the fences you would know that they were not cheap. |

By the way. First class experience in Gwinnett and at least some of the best officials we have ever had. The gentleman we had 2 of our games was the head guy I believe. All the guys had great strike zones and really humped it to get in position to make the call. To really get off subject...I really like th NGBA rule about spectators not being allowed to coach from the stands. I would love to see that everywhere, especially for the sake of the kids.

ecbstars: I agree about the North Gwinett umps being the best around, and I've seen a lot of umps. Many of them have been there for 10+ years.
Coaching from outside the fence...I'm in rehab, but its not going too well. |

Qwkslvr: Atta boy! Hitters count fastball? Was the celebration the helmet tap, or the bowling pins falling down? Anyone on base?
Here's what happens next, he starts hitting more, but you have to fight off the upper cut swing.
I think I'll have to wait till 12U to have such a fun problem to solve.
