At the high school age do you think Coaches should be able to tell players how to wear their hair, beard mustache on the baseball field?

No, but my son's school is that way and most high schools I've heard are that way. I personally don't have a problem with it, because some college and MLB programs are that way. Not to mention, when baseball comes to an end for them... Some of your 9-5 jobs are that way too. Not a bad time for our kids to start learning how the real world actually works!

Personally I do not think coaches should dictate hair styles or facial hair(clean shaved) unless the players are getting paid to play, or the school has a dress code that is being enforced like most private schools.

Yes, while I see no purpose for hair (head or face) policies, but if a coach wants to maintain a specific image for his program, I think he should be able to do so. Being on a HS baseball team is not a right. If you want to be in the club, you have to follow that club's rules, whether you think all the rules are important or not.

I think there's a lot of value in having a team policy re: facial hair, hair and other aspects of player appearance -- but ONLY if it's reasonable and consistently enforced!

I don't get caught up in appearance, but there's no sense in pretending it doesn't matter. I went to college with a guy who wore a jacket and tie to his classes almost every day, even in the hot months. He used to say, "you look good, you feel good ... you feel good, you do good." I thought he was kinda crazy at the time, but I have to admit -- he had a point!

^^^^^^^THIS!

I will also add that if the players hope is to go onto College the colleges are looking for what the kid can do over the next 4-5 years...i.e. they are hoping that kid hasn't grown as tall as he will, or gotten as strong as he will eventually be. Having a full beard may be cool for the ladies, BUT, it clues in the college coaches that you are likely done growing and may not be as projectable as the next kid.

Yes, the HS coach can dictate their uniforms, pants at knee or ankle, facial hair, or anything else he wants. It's his team and he sets the tone. Some don't want their squad to look like an unkempt rag tag group. Other coaches don't care. To each his own, but I believe that the HS coach absolutely should be able to dictate the grooming, code of conduct, uniform, and any other policy within the realm of his team. If there are legitimate health or religious issues, then those supersede his authority.

Question back to 743. Since you posed the question, I'm assuming you don't believe he should; why not?

Some good points however most businesses have relaxed the facial hair policy.

Now what if that said HS coach has a full beard does that change the dynamic? Or should he have a different set of standards?

I think you look at most pro teams. They let players be themselves and let them wear their pants the way they prefer. Baggy, socks showing etc. Also pro players are getting paid they know whats expected when they interview and agree to that policy. Kid don't really have a choice what coach they get in HS. I believe the Yankees are the only one with facial hair policy and they can still sport a mustache. Correct me if I am wrong...
Like someone above said you feel good you play good etc...
Maybe I feel better in a polo and Khakis than I do in a suit and tight tie around my neck. I want may players comfortable and I am teaching them about life and choices not telling them what to do. I do believe in certain policies of on and off field behavior but facial hair, long hair, buzz but, flat top, tattoo etc should not be my decision but the players and his parents.

Now as far as shaving to look younger. OMG you are pretty much trying to deceive a college recruiter? They can look at more than facial or leg hair to tell where 90% are in their growth development.

I wish our coach would enforce a hair policy but our school doesn't so that might be why. I personally loathe a non uniform look whether it's long hair, gross lumberjack beards, man buns, dirty pants, and the few kids who think they are above the rest wearing stirrups when the rest of the team doesn't even have them.

Long hair aside, I do know it's a struggle to get an 18 year old male to shave every day. They do end up looking a bit raggedy from time to time don't they?

You won't play at our HS if you are not neat, clean-cut, and professional. The kids are pushed to excel in class, on the field, and in life.

How does wearing stirrups make you "above the rest?" My son wears them because he likes the "old school" look.
I support him wholeheartedly, it takes me back to the days
when the players hustled every play and played the game for the love of it!
Baseball has many old traditions, I for one love to see this generation of young men go "old school!"

Players can wear their facial hair and regular hair anyway they want - unless the coach has a policy against it. It's the coach's team and what he says goes - regardless of what the players want to do. I think it's as simple as that.

The stirrup thing...everybody should wear the same uniform issued by the school. When a few deviate, it becomes a ME thing and not a TEAM thing. Nothing is wrong with stirrups per se.

If a HS or college coach wins, whether they allow it or not - will make it important/or good decision (or not), lol.

So it sounds like at your school your coach allows facial hair?
or can you not be near and have facial hair?

What does having facial hair have to do with not being pushed or being able to excel in class on the field and in life? These are separate points.

I see the Marlins Don Mattingly has implemented a no facial hair policy, This is a guy that wore a mustache when he played? It just does not make sense to me. (except it does because he is not sporting a mustache now) if he did he would be crazy to think his players would not want one as well.

My question is, is it okay for a coach to have a beard and not allow any facial hair? How do those that have responded with clean cut stuff and rules and policy sit with you?

There shouldn't be much individualization within the team itself, in my opinion. This does not include the coach. It can cause strife between players (especially during play-offs) when the sophomore can sport a bushy beard and the senior can barely grow peach fuzz. Everyone wears the same pants, shoes, shirts, socks...and everyone is clean cut and non-scruffy looking. When you all look similar it's easier to behave as a unit rather than an individual.

I have no problem with a facial hair policy but don't make me follow a policy you don't follow, does anyone disagree with this?

Not sure how wearing a well trimmed beard is not "professional looking" nor having some kids wear stirrups, and other leave their pants long, takes away from playing as team. However, it sure does make some of you sound seriously superficial. My son wears his pants up, 1 - because he likes them that way, and 2- because the team pants he was issued are 3 inches too short. Neither of which make him less of a team player than does his well groomed beard. Playing as a team is about attitude and effort, not about pant length and hair styles.

Not saying all kids are guilty. But some are. Guilty of what?

Guilty of trying to draw attention to themselves by what they wear or their long hair rather than letting their level of play do the talking for them.

Hit the ball. Throw the ball. Catch the ball. Save the semantics for the pros if you make it. Last time I checked, we were talking about HS baseball.

Personally, I don't think it matters at all. Many kids on my son's college team have the scruffy face look. But, I don't think that's the point here. The point here is you do what the coach says. Whether you agree or not...

An argument can be made for either side, but when it comes down to it, the coach is right. Just be part of the team and enjoy playing baseball. After all, that's what it's all about.

I would guess most of them with the long hair and facial hair are doing it to attract girls, not collages :-)

I disagree and don't believe I'm delusional.

Do you allow your children to do EVERYTHING that you allow yourself to do that is legally available to them? I don't. I'm an adult. I have rules that apply to me and different rules that apply to my children.

My role in the same household is different from theirs. Much like a coach has a much different role than his players on a high school team.

Is there a bit of hypocrisy in the rule, sure, but I also watch coaches who are too overweight and out of shape to touch their toes standing make kids run poles and do other exercises. It is what it is and as many have stated, whether you agree or not, it is completely within the purview of the head coach to set the rules for his players and not necessarily apply the same rules to himself. He's an apple and they're oranges, so not fair to consider them the same.
