Dizzy Dean needs new leadership. Tournament host site for "sale"....interesting way to run a non-profit.

This is nothing new. It's always been the case that host cities bid on the rights. Gate fees, etc., is part of the way to recoup. Many times the Parks & Rec association will work with chamber of commerce, etc., to help pony up the bid. They look at it as a revenue opportunity for hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc., so the additional tax revenue generated along with the direct revenue helping the community.

Rumor has it that if enough teams file a formal protest regarding location of DD State Tourny saying they will not attend due to location that they will move it to the next highest bidder for the tourny which is Carrollton. I know many parks have already done this. Any truth to this rumor?

I hope those families not willing to travel for a long weekend at the DD level don't plan on moving to travel ball. They will never make it past the first few years.

Sorry but you cannot compare DD to travel ball. If the DD state tourny is anything like last yrs tourny it is not a long wkend. We started play on either Tues or Wed and played one game per night. We did not end the tourny till Sun. If you go far in the tourny it is much longer then a long wkend. For those parents that have two working parents, you are asking for us to take a weeks vacation to play one DD tourny.

Travel ball tourny's are completed in a long wkend. I have an 11U who has played travel for 3 years and we often stay in hotels on wkends when tournys are far away. No problem with that. It is what is expected when you play travel. If DD played this tourny in a long wkend (and maybe they are) then I don't think this discussion would occur as most would go.

To ask the vast majority of families to take weeks vacation on top of another weeks vacation if playing in the WS is asking a lot. Also to suggest that we as parents not allow our kids the honor of playing all-stars and give our spots up for one tourny is laughable at best.

DD dropped the ball on this one. To grant the park that is the furthest away from the other 61 or so parks the state tourny and then expect all of us to show is not gonna happen. Did any of the southern teams come up last yr and play the state tourny? I don't recall seeing any. Maybe they were not part of DD last yr and that is why they did nt show but if they were you have to ask would you be willing to make that drive?

Again for those that are unable to attend this tourny I am sure someone will have a tourny that will draw a lot of teams in the Atl area this same weekend. Maybe like travel there can be a southern DD state tourny and a Northern DD state tourny. This is just another example as to why we cannot wait till next yr and play travel ball. Nothing like it in my opinion.

Good luck to all teams this summer whatever you decide to do!!

Allstars is travel ball for most teams (Except it seams for some teams in Atlanta).....don't believe we need to cater to the city people on this on (Besides the park in Valdosta is brand new and beautiful)....give up your spot and you'll sleep better at night knowing some 8 year old is having the time of his life in his first all-star tourney...

Baseball fan... Totally agree. If there tournies were held over a wkend we wwould not be having this discussion. Most would even go to Valdosta to play. Every travel ball affiliation does there tournies in a wkend, no matter how many teams play. Why can't DD? One answer is gate fees!!

TODDS, I started this discussion, and glad some are on our side, and also good to see the other side.

T13, All Stars is about the best kids from a park playing. If we aren't willing to go to Valdosta, then no one is from our park. Nuff said. Giving up your spot is not what Dizzy Dean is about. Appreciate your opinion, but you can't compare travel and DD, it's not the same kind of commitment or expectation.

With that said, TODDS, we are looking elsewhere. Grand Slam and Nations are both putting on 8U CP tourneys at the beach. Grand Slam in Panama City, Nations in Pensacola. We're considering one of these and just not doing States or World Series, which is a shame, but would rather be at the beach than Valdosta and Southhaven. If you want to know more, let me know, maybe we can e-mail or something.

I haven't heard anything about DD changing it from Valdosta to Carrolton or anywhere else. But now that I've found other options, it would be hard to convince me to choose the Dizzy tourneys either way.

A DD director told me they understand the time and travel commitment and that Valdosta was planning on making it as short as possible, starting Thursday and going through Tuesday. Not sure how that is short.

You may not cater to them but they have the best DD teams around. And without most of the northern teams playing it won't be much of a state tournament. Maybe someone should put of a allstar state tournament up north. There is a BPA world series in Chattanooga, Tn this year. Check out TN BPA in the national tournaments listings.

I don't think you can go to B if you qualify for A. That is how it used to be.

Spoke with Dizzy Dean President Danny Phillips about this and he said that if you qualify for A, you have to play in A, and if you qualify for B, you have to play in B. Also, asked if you can skip state and play in World Series, and he said, if you qualify for A, you have to play in it to play in World Series, but if you qualify for B, you can skip state and play in World Series. How backwards is that?

Dizzy Dean has been going downhill for years. The rec park we used to play out of was very close to switching to Cal Ripken but unfortunately Dizzy Dean has the most competition for people to play in Southeast TN and NW GA, and until all the parks get together and make the switch at once it will never work.. Dizzy Dean has very good rules to allow the kids learn and play ball but the upper management has been awful for years.

Danny is the National guy, so no mention, but spoke to District director, and they are looking at options. They have received a lot of complaints. One thing was to have 3 games per day per team in Valdosta to move it faster, but not sure how viable that is. Teams will drive 5/6 hours to play and some will lose in one day just to go home. He said they are considering Carrollton, but are weighing the options. Hoping to hear something soon. But it seems like the more complaining about it the better chance to get it moved.

Doesn't really matter to me either way, but ask the kids if they would like to go spend 4 days playing ball and staying in a hotel with thier team mates, or drive across town to play and come home each night.

I am sure that Valdosta has plenty of things to do for the kids, and I would bet that the hospitality of the locals would be second to none. For most of these kids all stars is the highlight of thier baseball year and I am not sure I would take it away from my child.

I do agree however, that most all star tournaments are too long. Either way, I hope all the kids have a great experience.

War Eagle...Agree on all points but I just know that we are unable to take the time off from work. Our team is not planning on going to the WS either way. For those that were planning on doing both state and WS they would have to take 2 weeks off from work to attend both. That is alot to ask is all I am saying. Especially when the majority of the DD parks are located North of I-20. Add in other sibling activities and it is just way too much to ask for parents IMO.

For those that are not gonna go to Valdosta, what are your plans for that wkend tournies? Any good alternatives out there (that are in Atl area).

I actually heard they changed it to start on Wednesday July 4th, not sure about when it will end though.

ToddS, I'm bummed for you guys, and you're right on all fronts. Holding out hope that they decide to move it. The fact that they are moving the dates, doesn't make sense, it's still probably going to be just as long.
