The kids love the idea of using a wood bat like the Major Leaguers use...then they find out how heavy they are! For 8U - 11U, the weight slows the bat speed down a lot. The bigger stronger boys have even more of an edge than usual and are much more likely to get it out of the infield. The smaller boys might be best served to hit strategically, by that I mean bunt for a hit, push bunt, sacrifice bunt, hit grounders behind the runners to advance them. It slows down the game, and makes you think harder and execute better to squeeze runs across. You gotta play for 1 run at a time. Infielders have to really charge the weak grounders to get speedy runners out.
We won a small wood bat tourney in the rain last year in 10U, and it was like watching snails race. My son's not big or strong enough to swing the lumber, so I'd prefer to avoid wood bat tourneys. It does give him the chance to work on his bunting though.
Your boys will have a blast with it, and that's what its all about.

This will be our first wood bat tourney this weekend and have no idea of what to expect other than fewer hits. Anyone got any experiences they would like to share?
