Saw a play that happened twice at ATPP this weekend. There was a play at the plate and runner did not slide. Ump called runner safe both times. Catcher was injured on the second time it happened. Does the rule below mean you have to slide or your out because the umps called both times safe.

8.04.C Whenever a tag play is evident, a runner must slide or seek to avoid contact with the fielder and / or catcher.

Attempting to jump, leap, or dive over the fielder and / or catcher is not interpreted as seeking to avoid contact.

Malicious contact shall supersede all obstruction penalties.

Rule 8.04.C Penalty: The runner shall be called out and may be ejected from the game at the umpire’s discretion.

What about when a catcher dives at a runner coming home? Say the ball goes to the back-stop and he goes after it. Instead of tossing the ball to the covering pitcher he dives head first increasing the potential for the runner and himself to be injured on the slide. What is the rule on that situation?

That is a good question. I always understood the rule to mean you had to slide at home or you would be called out. I might be wrong.
