Unfortunately the "skip third" trick play has been around for decades. I actually had a high school age player ask me what the sign was for cutting straight to home. I asked him what he was talking about and he said his old team had the third base coach check to see if the umpires were looking towards first and if so would give a sign to skip third. Needless to say we did not implement that play. |

Back in the day when I played high school ball we ran this play probably once a year. Always worked. The key is you have to have two man umpire crew. We would all sit in the dug out and just laugh at how mad the other teams fans would get. I have not seen anybody do it in youth ball. Which team did it. I would bet money when it happened the other teams fans went ballistic.

Learned a new trick play after Slugfest ended. Yep, AFTER it ended. Worked so well, NOBODY caught it at the time.
visualize this with me...
Runners at 2nd and 3rd, hitter push bunts towards 1st, EVERYONE's watching the action near 1st base as the pitcher fields the bunt, the bunter dashes towards 1st base, and the 1st baseman's rushing to cover the bag.
NOBODY's watching clear across the field at the runner who was on 2nd base. Of course the runner at 3rd scores easily, but the trick is what the lag runner is doing who started on 2nd base.
He bypasses 3rd base entirely, and runs a hook route to home plate! By the time eyes move away from the action at 1st base, he's back in the basepath, slides, and scores too!
Whatta yah think of that?

BREAMKING: I won't say who, but nobody went ballistic because nobody directly involved with the game saw it. I can't even fathom an adult teaching children to do that. I'm hopelessly naive. |

Mr. Moser, regarding your "trick play"...my grandson did the exact thing last weekend at East Cobb in a 12U game EXCEPT he touched 3rd base--no tricks/no trick play & he scored (he picked up on the squeeze sign while on 2nd). So, it can be done LEGALLY (you would have enjoyed it; sorry you missed it) |

I just want to say we had a blast at the Forsyth County Slugfest! Admittedly out Georgia Jackets underachieved last weekend in the TC Spring Frost appearing a bit flat following their USTBA Feb Frost tournament win. Then our boys stumbled out of the gate at the FC Slugfest as well going 0-2 in the pool play. However, they certainly rose to the occasion as bracket play ensued and got back to the consistent, fundamentally sound approach that is the key to their success.
As always seems to be the case we had a wonderful game with the 643 Jaguars who always push our boys to play better. Then the classic, exciting game with Team Georgia. What fun that was! Overtime, international rules and we get a big two out, two strike bases clearing double to build a good lead. Then fighting to hold on to that lead in the bottom of the inning. Who would figure the game would end with the potential tying run getting picked off 3rd base for the final out?
Having to play that extra "play in" game against the Georgia Select Red team factored into our available pitching by the time we got to the semi finals and championship game with the 643 Cougars. They jumped out of the gate propelled by the grand slam to get all of their runs in the first inning. The boys were able to hold them off the scoreboard the remaining 5 innings but some great defensive plays by the Cougars kept our offense in check and they were able to seal the championship.
Like the Jaguars, the Cougars, Team GA, and ECB Titans bring out the best in our boys and challenge them to play better. I got to observe several of the other games in the 11u majors. In my opinion, based on what I've seen the past three weekends any of the major teams in this group could beat any one of the other ones at any time right now - a lot of parity. As the season progresses we'll know more. The AAA teams that played up (ECB Luck and both Ga Select teams) are capable of knocking off some major teams from time to time as well but will have to work hard. Overall the teams who had more practice time and have played in a few tournaments seemed to fare better. I'm sure the Midway Dirty Dawgs will be in the mix once they've had more time to play. |

A "little birdie" had told me about that earlier in the day yesterday while discussing the skip 3rd stuff. It kills me not to be able to attend every game, and have to miss stuff like that. Glad I have friends to tell me these great stories. I've been enjoying watching your special little guy play since Coach Pitch days up around Chattsworth and Dalton. He stood out to me right off. I went home one Sunday after losing to you guys and Googled him. I found the MVP DD WS write up. That is when I first knew I had an eye for talent.

Its one thing for a coach or player to steal a sign, or do the hidden ball trick or other sometimes effective plays to get out of a jam. I'm not saying I agree with all of this but it is all within the rules of the game. Purposely not touching third base is nothing but cheating, based on the rules. Any coach that teaches this is not respecting the game and should be called out on it. |

Mr. Moser, No question in anyone's mind that you have an eye for talent. However, my grandson did not win the DD WS MVP and was not on the Bandits team then. We enjoy your commentaries and value your opinions....keep doing what you love |

Bandit13 What are the odds of me being wrong about this after our conversation a few days back? Amazing stuff!
