The "rotational" system for a few minutes of practice is a nice idea. Kind of makes a game of it at the end of the practice just as many coaches end the practice on a light drill or game sort of thing. But honestly, all this talk about the kids having to play multiple positionsfor high school is just so they can rotate the kids into the positions they want to play more readily. Because when these kids get to high school, if they are athletic, they can adjust to just about any position. Might take a couple of innings, but they have been doing this so long, they can adjust. Better to know a position well and beat someone out of the spot and then have a backup. Most of them do by the time they hit that age they don't have to switch every other inning at 12 to accomplish that. |

We do not rotate each player at all nine positions. We give them an open door policy to work at home at other ones and allow them to try it out for a short time at practice. We have our core but we encourage them to work at thier current best and thier least.
As for HS there is plenty of time to learn positions and as you know not all kids are athletic enough to pick things up. Many on teams are big hitters with slow feet and some have great footwork. I feel it is best based on my Minor Leauge experience to give them the best knowledge of all positions and the game. I saw it too many times in the 90s that a prospect would come in and only know third base for example. Not a pretty sight. You can point to some outfield experiements recently in the MLB. Not saying that any of our boys will make it there but it is about learning and challenging the boys.
I am not a Ford guy but hey take a peak it may strike a cord with some:
