There looks to be alot of good teams in this tourney this weekend. Should be some good baseball being played... Some new teams that I havent seen so far this fall in the Misfits, Triple Threat and a couple Gwinnett based teams. |

Still thinking about how incredible the hitters for valley thunder were. 2-6 hitters in the line up were the REAL deal. Complete STUDS!

That was a fun tournament, alot of good teams. Wwe played the Valley Thunder, Sunday morning and lost by a run. # 2 and # 3 hitters for them went back to back with Homeruns to beat us 5-4. Good team, the Thunder. The Misfits were solid, but then again I think with the roster they had this weekend, there would not be to many tourneys where they wouldnt be picked to win it.. Good job by the Misfits. |

On a side note the Ga Stars did well finishing 3rd. They started out well against the misfits jumping on top for a minute then it looked like they ran out of pitching. Lot of blasts out of the park from the Stars. Great finish for a gwinnett team!
Bandithawk, congrats! Watched part of the ship game but had to go take down my tent in the parking lot....lol..... Based on the score it looks like it was a nail biter! |

Coach D, the two fields at ECB that the 13u teams played on are field #4 and field #6. I think field #4 is 250' and field #6 is 265' with a 20' wall. Don't know that for sure but that's what I've heard. It's hard to believe but I think both of these fields are too small for 13u major. These kids are very big and strong these days.
Gwinnett, thanks. We had a fun weekend. The ECB Pride team is really solid and they gave us a battle in pool play. I was also impressed with the GA Stars and Valley Thunder teams. Both of them could flat out hit the baseball.
Overall, a great weekend of baseball and a well run tournament by Tony and crew. |

I was out there early at ECB one day and a guy had one of those measuring wheels and I walked off field 4 down the line at about 255, CF about the same and RF 250. Field 6 was about the same I only did CF. The 20 foot wall makes it a tougher shot but I think you are right anything under 285 at this age is too small. |

IMO, I think as long as we are not seeing 5+ homeruns a game from each team then the field is not to small. Home runs are what makes the games fun. I know kids would rather play on a field where they have a chance for a home run instead of a field that is 325-350 with no chance.
Sounds like there were homeruns hit this weekend but it does not sound like a crazy amount of homeruns were hit.
Why put back the fences, let the boys have fun.
There will always be some freaky kid who can hit them farther then everyone else and the field size is to small. If that is the case just walk that kid. |

It really ceases being "fun" about half way through 12u. Flyouts that clear the fence, or line drive double/triples that squeak over are not fun at all at the 13u major level. This is when the true art of pitching is really taking hold. This is where moving runners and executing a sacrifice begins to become the game. This is when real baseball is starting to click with the boys as they get ready for the 60/90 field and high school. Cheap home runs when a pitcher makes a good pitch to get that fly ball out are not fun. I agree that 300' should be the standard at 13u. By your measure, 10 home runs a game is the threshold? Let's go play at ATPP!

Yeah . Not taking anything away from whomever hit them but that is a bit short. I say 285 min. Is a good number.didn't see any of them so not sure if it would have made a difference. |

Well intentionally walking someone is part of baseball, as far as I know and I have lots of fun watching parents and coaches reacting to this. LOL
Yea maybe I overstated 5 homeruns per team. That did not happen this weekend. But 2 or 3 per game is not bad.
I doubt there was a game with over 5 homeruns in it. Scores seem pretty reasonable.
Again, homeruns are part of baseball. In the major league there is at least one a game. Very rare not to have one. Should the Big Leagues move the fences back since Albert hits over 40? No, but I bet they walk him when they can.
If we play on fields that the 16 year old do. Then there will never be any homeruns. The hitter who beats the pitcher gets a long flyball caught instead of a homerun.
I am sure some teams are better suited for the smaller fields and some are better suited for bigger fields. My team has an awesome outfield so we prefer the bigger fields.

The homeruns hit, atleast the 4 I saw would have been out of a 285' field as well. They were bombs, not routine flies that kept going. Honestly ECB Field 6 is an adequate size for 13u, there were not alot of homeruns hit this past weekend and if you saw the kids that hit them you would know that even a 285' field wouldnt stop them from hitting somemore. All big kids. My son hit a Grand Slam on Friday night in the tournament (shameless plug by dad!!!) But I wouldnt be opposed to them playing on a 280-285' field.

No one's arguing that the 285 shot at this age should be a HR. I've personally seen 6 balls hit on field 4 that would have been doubles or outs on a 285 or larger field and at least 3 on field 6 that would have been outs on a larger field this fall alone. My point was that the cheap HR might be a thrill and fun at 10, isn't at 13. I don't disagree with pc that intentional walks are part of the game, but with small fields and cheap HR's, who do you walk? The 8 hole? When a good out pitch gets the flyball out, only to see it slip over the top of the wall at 265 with the outfielder's back pressed against the wall, it ceases to be legitimate baseball. I've been through this with my two older sons at ECB and those two fields are too small for this age. They'll continue to play wood bat on those two fields at 14u and then get to the bigger fields. Your power hitters are going to get their long balls on these fields and the larger fields (of course BBCOR will have a say in that), but when the non-power hitters get the cheap HR's, then the game becomes negatively impacted by the field size.
For the record, my sons aren't the big thumpers. My oldest has exactly 3 career HR's (2 in HS, 1 in travel), all legitimate on fields 300 - 340. He's a leadoff hitter and happened to get a hold of a couple. 3 sounds about right for a line drive hitter at this stage. What he didn't do was hit a popout that just cleared a fence at 260, nor would he have wanted to. He'll tell you that one of the three was wind assisted, so the kids know if it's legit or not.
Bombs will be bombs. If a 13u hits it 285, tip the cap, he should touch 'em all. What these small fields are doing is making bombs out of duds.

As a Dad of a kid who plays at the major level, I think that 300' is a good minimum size for 13u major.
Last year, the Bandits had at least 4 players that routinely hit home runs over 300' fences at 12U. This past weekend, I saw a bunch of kids with the same capability in the TC tournament on several different teams. Outfield play is becoming more and more important as these kids grow and teams like PC's that excel out there should at least have a chance to make an out on a 260' popup in my opinion. Also as a pitcher, a 260' popup on a team's #4 hole hitter is a good result. That pitcher should be rewarded with an out.
Again, just my humble opinion ... |

I think when they changed age cut off years ago it made every existing park too small. Before it was just right now at these ages 11-14 it has really changed the game. Of course parks were ok before the age change but now we are stuck with them. I have noticed most new parks are expanding the distance some to take this into account. |

Sorry Breamking, 3 months did not make that big of a difference to make every ballpark too small. |

Routinely? Perhaps a better word would be occasionally. Unless the distance is marked on the fences (300 ft), many home runs are occasionally and often unintentionally exaggerated. The same can be said for times for the 40 or 60-yard dashes and/or the velocity of pitches. The same goes for the size of fishes caught! |

MLbscout, did you watch every game the Bandits played last year? I DID. I can also read distance signs very well. |
