I have to say this was a great 10U season in GA. I know that we truly enjoyed all the competition in the State and surrounding states and thank you all for a great season.
With that said, I must say that the one thing that I saw this year that I had issue with is when coaches teach thier players to rag the opposing pitcher and how insulting coaches can be towards another teams players. Yes I said that right, opposing players. We had a few incidents this year where we went ahead or was fighting back in a game and the opposing coaches would speak loudly about our players in a negative way out of frustration or would allow his players to say negative comments loudly on purpose in the field or from the dugout. I ask that we all inspect ourselves about what we are supposed to be teaching these kids outside of baseball. I know it is easy to get caught up in the games and get frustrated at times, but as Men we have to remember that we are not just coaches but are Role Models.
In closing let me say that we must all realiize when the dust settles and all these kids are grown and more than half of them are never playing baseball again, (according to statistics) what will be our legacy or teaching. Do you want a legacy of bad sportmanship and knowing that you never taught your kids how to lose, even though its not fun, or after all the hard work and sweat do you want them to remember the golden rule of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
It is my prayer and hope that as anyone reads this that we will remember there is a right way to teach hardwork, success, and sportsmanship and there is a wrong way. I hope we all will prepare these young men for more than just winning at all cost even if it means acting unrespectfully and remember to teach them sportmanship as we ready them for life in baseball or outside of it. In the end, it is not about us Coaches, It is about the Kids and thier future.
Congrats to all for a Great Year! See you in 2012. |

I agree, extremely well said! We even had parents of players on an oppossing team start yelling and cursing at our parents when they lost. Literally a "grown" woman told a 15 year old to kiss her a## and even bent over! Really? what in the world kind of example was she setting??? A poor one. I really hope parents and coaches can open their eyes and see what poor sportsmanship they are teaching their children! |

time2travel-I agree about the parents thing. I saw and heard much much more of this crap from parents than I ever did from coaches/players. The funny thing is that it wasn't the dads (they were too busy yelling at their sons lol) but from the moms screaming at the top of their lungs at the umps for "bad" calls when their sons were involved. I also heard alot of mouthing off about balls and strikes. I can't tell you the number of times I overheard parents blaming the umps for a loss, even if they got run ruled.
Talk about setting the wrong example for their kids!! Forget the fact that the vast majority of the time the mom was wrong (either it was a strike or a ball because blue had a consistent strike-zone, or the call was made correctly on a put out). I found it particularly amusing when blue was calling everything a strike on the outside corner for BOTH teams and one mom went beserk when her son got called out looking and then went beserk the next half inning when her son was pitching and blue called an obvious outside pitch that the catcher had to move two feet over to catch ball four on a 3-2 count (both strikes were outside corner looking).
I also can't tell you how many times I saw parents go up to their kids and say "you were safe" or that wasn't a strike etc...
Luckily most kids tune out noise outside the playing field and don't hear all of the mouthing off at the umps but going up to your kid and saying blue screwed you and it wasn't your fault is absolutely wrong and detrimental to your kid.
Life isnt always fair, respecting authority, getting up off the ground gaining your composure and trying again are but a few of the many life lessons baseball can teach our kids. Parents that blame everyone but their own kid are undermining all of the reasons MOST parents get their kids involved in travel ball to begin with.

I saw some great baseball in 2011. Parents and coaches are always going to disagree and everyone thinks their kid is the best, so as far as team blow ups and folks arguing I would say that this year has been no differant than any other. It is our job as coaches and parents to stop the belly aching and remember this quote " can't we all just get along". So as this year comes to an end , change the things you can and try not to stick your foot in your mouth about the things you can't. |

WELL SAID...if parents and dads that are coaches would stop trying to live their dreams out through their kids cause they weren't good enogh and focus on the kids and developing their character to become young men..thank goodness for my two boys coaches that we don't have to deal with that |
