Not too hard to figure it out....

11U Fan,

So you've seen this team play twice, what is your opinion? Were they the best team you saw this fall? If not, who would you rate ahead of them? The great thing about message boards is everyone has their own opinion and it's all in good fun anyway isn't it?

Personally, I think there are a couple of ways for anyone to evaluate a teams performance.

1) What was their record vs. teams in the same class as them and more importantly the top teams in their class? For example, if your a AAA team, what is your record vs. other AAA teams. Personally, for you AA teams out there, this might be a little mis-leading since there will be close to 100 AA teams out there and after the top 20 AA teams there can be a significant drop off.

2) Tournaments won? Like #1, this will let you know how consistent your team is week to week. Any team can play really well for a couple of games but can you go 5-0 when your not playing your best? Look back at last years top teams in all classifications and see what have they won? Winning a small 6-8 team tournament nobody heard of means???

11UFan, don't get me wrong brother, the Rays will be a top team next season, I called it early this fall when some good talent was migrating towards that team.

Also, for those caught up in the Laurens Lightning team hype and I was one of them, haven't they lost to the Rays and Outlaws and got shut out twice in the championship games? Ouch! They had a relatively easy road to the ship but they did get there, they are more like a decent AAA GA team imho.

Insider,

I agree with your 1) and 2). I guess 1) can be gaged once these teams get through a few Spring tourney's. I would add another measure. Are teams playing in the tournaments with the best teams and how they do, are they getting blown out by the best teams, keeping it close or winning. I would rank a team that plays the best competition higher if they keep it close with those teams over a team that wins against a bunch of teams that are average.

As far as the Fall goes (and this relates to your 2)) I think the Longhorns (Outlaws) won at least 2 tourneys and were probably very competitive in most they played in. Their offense appears to be really good and they seemed to be solid in pitching and defense so I would probably give them the nod for the Fall. I thought the Moccs, Hornets, Barrett and Sandy Plains all were strong and had good pitching. Not dissing any other teams as I surely did not see them all this Fall. Insider you should chime in and let us know who you think the stronger teams were this Fall.

Since the Rays only made it to one championship game, even though it was a big one and they won, we will have to wait and see what happens in the Spring to really find out how good they are. As you so rightly said and I quote "Any team can play really well for a couple of games but can you go 5-0 when your not playing your best".

Obviously the Spring will include the real proven top teams that don't play in the Fall (Braves, Stealth, Grays, Stars etc..) and these teams are going to be the teams to beat if any team wants to claim they are in the top tier.

I don't know much about Laurens but from the scores it looks like they are a good defensive team but offensively?? I will defer to you since you seem to be one of the most knowledgeable on the 11U board.

I can hardly wait until Spring :)))))....

Hey ecbinsider I would agree that Laurens Lightning is a decent AAA team. We had a great time in both tournments but hope to bring a better team in spring.
