For the coaches out there, how much time does one feel is appropriate for indoor cage and pitching work before the season starts? Last season, my son's team didn't do any indoor work as they waited to get started right around Feb due to so many kids playing basketball. I heard most teams started in late December or early Jan. Through the first month or so, many felt like our team was really behind the 8 ball so to speak as we struggled to hit.
How much time do you spend on indoor cage work? |

We're starting the first week of December, taking two weeks off for the holiday, then picking back up the first week of January. Once per week for 2 hours. Separately, we will also begin voluntary professional pitching instruction once per week on the same timeline. |

We start practicing around the 2nd or 3rd week in Jan. That gives us 6 weeks to get ready which about as long as a spring training for the professionals. It's tough to start any earlier due to weather and kids in basketball. We usually don't play our best during the first couple of tournaments because kids are still playing basketball and trying to fit in baseball. All that said, it's a very long season so we try to pace our team.

The kids need 6-8 weeks off from the baseball routine. We finish Nov 14 and will start up mid Jan. Take the time off, the kids will always be sharper if they are hungry for it. All our Georgia Select Teams will do a 4-5 week speed/hitting program at Georgia Sports Center.

Interesting that you mentioned speed and agility, I've heard of several teams that have kids taking part in such activities in the winter.
Question for those that take part in programs like this, how do you determine it's working? 40 yard dash before and after? Shuttle times? Just curious to hear, I don't doubt it works but wonder how much improvement one can expect. |

It depends on the type of workout and the frequency. We do a general program: CORE Conditioning, focus on drills/movements that will provide flexibility in the hips. Flexibility is more important than speed in most youth-10th graders.
You can tell a little by speed testing and vertical jump. We train for baseball movements, so we see more success in those baseball specific actions, better first steps, better running form...which builds better athletes and control of movements. |
