Grass infields, except around the mound, all three bases, and homeplate for all ages. Are there any fields like this? I see the pros being 1. less rain outs (the grass will be able to handle more rain) 2. fewer lips on the infield. What are some other pros and some cons?
Road runner field is an awesome place to play. Lower scoring games as hard grounders become playable. Less dusty. They keep the grass short enough so that slipping doesn't seem to be a problem. The home cooking with umpires is their biggest asset :).
We tried this at Powder Springs on one of the fields a couple years ago--It would of been great if it was a private field--If you have a field with multiple teams using it the baselines get a dirt track worn in them and it looks terrible so we cut them out to dirt.
Our team played in the Global Sports World Series in Orange Beach, AL. All of the fields we played on were of this type. during any game with players slipping on the grass. As Gnat said....after the week of hard baseball, you could start to see the grass in the base paths getting thin. The grass did slow all groundballs down. All the players, coaches and parents really liked the looks of the fields.
RoadRunner field was probably one of the few in the area that was in great shape to play on this past weekend. Even after more rain Saturday afternoon it was ready to go on Sunday with minimal prep.
If I were building a field I'd go see this one and talk to them about it.
