For all of the newer coaches out there in the younger age groups (7-10), can some of you veteran travel coaches recommend some great training materials to help teach these coaches to properly coach. I'm looking for websites, videos, and/or books that teach the proper fundamentals of the game. I know that there are a lot of good materials on hitting and pitching, but what about other areas such as catchers, infield defense, outfield defense, and baserunning. Also helpful would be materials on how to run effective practices at these younger ages.

You may want to check out Blueprint for Baseball--an ebook that has some insightful communication, motivation and skills development topics for coaches (and parents)...

Ebaseballtips a site where you can download specific training videos from $2.99-$12.99 covering infield, outfield, catching and of course hitting and pitching.

Baseball-Training-Instruction is a free website with many, many coaching resources.

If you need any additional resources please E-Mail me I would be happy to help out with equipping your newer coaches.

For coaches of younger ages (any age for that matter), a good knowledge of pitching is essential for the care of your players as well as development. Pitching really is simple, and many of those that charge by the hour would have you believe that it is complicated and you need their expertise. Not so. One of the best ways to learn (and this is for Moms and Dads too!!) is to visit www.pitching.com and read about Dick Mills. His program is old school, i.e. Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, etc. and it works. It worked for me and my teams (3 Major State Titles, one World Series win, one runner up, all with different teams) because it breaks it down to very simple mechanics that anyone can learn.

First of all, you need the bible of baseball:
Baseball Playbook - by Ron Polk

Second, take out an online subscription to www.mycoachonline.com and check out the training videos on there. There are about 100 - 150 HOURS of instructional videos on there. Mainly college coaches that are giving lectures at the Alabama High School Coach's association, but there are some excellent high school coaches on there as well. (One of the catching videos by the high school coach from Oxford, AL is the best catching instruction I have ever seen...and that includes the Tom Emansky videos and others I've purchased).

Finally, read the Baseball Playbook and take his advice. Always create practice plans that maximize the use of field time. The more drills/activities/fundamentals you can effectively manage to have going at the same time with the least amount of standing around, the more effective your practices will become.
