Parents being told if Little Johnny doesnt make the team you wont hear from us. Duh. Why not take the time and give parents feed back on what their child needs more work at in order to make a better impression the next time-especially for the younger aged (9/10) players. Especially if there arent that many kids at a tryout. I could understand if it were a huge cattle call like East Cobb. |

Because for every one set of parents that truly want the feedback, there are 10 that want to argue with you about why you are wrong and how your team is going to be sorry they let the kid get away. Especially if the coach has a kid on the team. Enveribly the coaches kid gets dragged into the subject with "Well he is as good as your kid." etc.
Coaches should post a list of players that make the team in a timely manner. This timing needs to be explained to the parents ahead of time.
I would also suggest starting the tryouts out with a speech that includes:
"As you can see, not all players here will make the team. That does not mean they are not good players, it just means it was not a right fit for the team. It takes different skills, all working together, to make a team successful. If your child does not make the team, and you would like to receive feedback, please send me an e-mail. I won't debate whether they should have made it or not, but will be extremely happy to give you feedback on what I think might help them in future tryouts. It might be something as simple as "Find a team that does not already have 3 first basemen." We appreciate your interest in our team. Do you have any questions before we start?" |

Pet Peeve!
Show some class travel ball coaches! Do not attend another teams workout/tryout/clinic. Have you no shame?
Popular or not, do the right thing, for the right reason.(Unknown)

Why not? as long as the coach isn't trying to recruit you players what diff does it make? If he is approaching parents or players then i see a problem. |

Scrifice, there were coaches at our team tryouts, I did not see a problem with it. It is a very competitive environment. Hey there may be some scraps out there. Most are held at public places. I guess the only ones that you could keep folks from coming to may be the ones held at private fields like the 643 tryout. |

Not sure where I stand on other coaches showing up at a teams tryouts. I will mention however that the coach in question that showed up at Sacrifice53's tryout also showed up at the 643 one for the same age group. |

If you are a coach looking for scraps then you need to re-evaluate what you are doing as a team. A coach at somebody else's tryout just looks bad . |

There will be a lot of coaches at the East Cobb Tryouts. Partially to see if there are some kids they are recruiting that show up there, and partially to see if there are any players that have not seen before that might be of interest. It's when they start talking to parents of those kids during the EC tryout that I think is in bad taste.
Find out who they are and contact them after the tryout. |

I recently attended another teams try out but it was not to recruit players, I had many friends there and wanted to say hello. The main reason for my visit was to see if there was anything I could take away from the try outs such as drills and such that I could use.
This is not nearly as bad as other coaches continually recruiting committed players on your team, wink wink! |

Yeah you were looking at that SS and Catcher! I am just playing messing with you. I like to attend tryouts and don't even have a son trying out, don't coach either, should I be banned? |

Alter-ego,Getting to know the parents is almost as important as the players, and that goes both ways. If you're serious about a player or team you need to get a feel for the coach or parent. If you make a committment it's for a year and that can be a long time if personalities clash either way.One bad parent can cause havoc in the stands and then it spreads like a wild fire. |
