There seems to be more and more postings in the teams are looking to add players sections that use the words "Need more kids due to injuries". Is it just me or do you want to write back to each and every coach and say "Injuries huh, what did you guys do to the kids, and why on earth would I send mine there?"

Perhaps coaches should be more specific on what type of injuries...skateboarding injuries, football injuries, 4-wheeler injuries....because I'm telling you if you just say you need new players due to injuries I'm going to think it was poor coaching that injured them.

I see that as kids get older, more injuries occur. Sure, some of these could be do to poor coaching. But many are do to kids growing and playing hard. My son's varsity team has 20 kids on the roster. Three are out with injuries. Two of those injuries are baseball related. I don't believe the coach was responsible for any of them.

It's a good point. but from personal experience....Last year it was a broken leg due to skiing over spring break.
this year - no sore arms, no baseball injuries to speak of but we did have a kid get hurt while running around (twisted ankle) during recess at school and another currently has a bruised wrist from trampolining like a boss... :-)

Depends on the age but boys will be boys.

I agree that boys will be boys. And, if the injuries are baseball related it doesn't mean overuse by the current coach. Personally, I wouldn't look at those postings and have any concern. It would be like saying in major league baseball that players shouldn't sign with teams as free agents because the team had players who got hurt. It's a sport and in any sport or activity, injuries are the nature of the beast. Also, I think at the older ages you see more injuries for two reasons. One, because they've been playing for years and now things are breaking down. And two, because now the boys are old enough to truly realize they are hurt. I think at younger ages when a player says their arm hurts or their leg hurts, coaches and parents sometimes don't give them enough credit and expect them to "toughen up". But when they 13 and up they now and communicate better with what is wrong and can give specifics like "my elbow began hurting when I threw that pitch and it hurts here". And, parents are now concerned about their child's future a little more if they're still playing at this age. If a 14yo comes to you and says his arm hurts, it's likely the parent will intervene and have the child sit and take him to a doctor for examination. They don't want to risk their chances of making it worse and harming his future in HS, college, and maybe someday the pros. But when a 9yo comes up and says his arm hurts, often times they are told to toughen up and the parent's only concern is playing time. Just my 2 cents.

It could also be that there are baseball related injuries, but are not the fault of the current travel coach. There are many parents who get their kids extra pitching lessons and/or play on multiple teams simultaneously. It could be overuse perpetrated by the parents. A middle school or high school player could have been overworked during their school season leading to issues during the travel season. Everyone is going to blame the travel coach, but he may have gotten damaged goods that the school ball coach caused. Case in point: One of our top pitchers logged close to 40 IP during his middle school season (<20 game schedule). I'm making the conscious and deliberate decision to limit his time on the mound this spring as a result of him being overworked during school ball. This hurts our team's performance, but it's what's in the best interest for this player and his long term development.

I agree that there are coaches out there that only work off of the scoreboard, but the reason & cause of injuries is a more complex issue with layers of potential reasons for the injury. But, like you said, asking for more clarification wouldn't hurt anything either.

For us...broken arm, broken leg, hernia, broken knee, and one whose (back of the) shoulder hurts (but had thrown only 7 innings).

Definitely more teams w/ injuries but I wouldn't put it blindly at the feet of the coach.

I know there are a lot of injuries now but also know coaches use this instead of another post about needing one more player to complete our amazing team..After posting several requests for players I have seen coaches change it to "its your lucky day because we lost a couple of players due to injuries". Guess it sounds better than saying we had a player or two leave for other teams..

Maybe not injury at all... Just an excuse, but imagine if some were completely honest like so: "Our team is looking for 1 (or more) players because we lost some due to disgruntled parents tired of coach playing daddy/buddy ball. With inquiring to our team, please note, this is a dad-run team, and head coach or GM has total control over all decisions, and further, you need to know that head coach's son is in the bottom 1% of the team, but bats 1-4, never sits, and always plays SS/2B/3B. So, please contact us for a private workout and opportunity of a lifetime"

Almost as good as "I realize we've been on 5 teams the past 3 years, but we're just looking for the right opportunity and yes my son does catch and looking for the opportunity to do more." (note - by 'more' they really mean 'well actually he doesn't like to catch', and every time you catch my kid I'll use the old 'passive aggressive' attitude and comments as you said he could play other positions too..and say something like "look he just caught one inning and looks really tired can he get some time in the middle infield now?")
