I'm gonna piggy back on what pride coach just said. I heard a story about a kid who got cut from his freshman team when he was clearly one of the better players. Why? He's an even better football player!
I guess the feeling was that he'd leave baseball eventually and choose football so let's go with who will still be around in 3 years? I don't know...but I guess unless you are a pitcher, a 2 sport athlete just isn't. Anymore.
That doesn't mean don't play other sports...but it could mean you need to pick one to play with your HS and find other avenues of playing other sports after the age of 14-15. I know plenty football players who didn't make the cut because while the others played baseball all summer and fall, they were on the football field and just simply got left behind. At least at our school anyway. |

Or Deion Sanders, Brian Jordan, Russell Wilson, Troy Aikman, Tom Brady, John Elway Toby Gerhart, Colin Kaepernick, Dan Marino, Donovan McNabb, Golden Tate, Jameis Winston, etc... I want to go on, but I hope the point is made. Many baseball coaches drop football players these days. It's definitely hurting the sport of baseball... |

1000% agree. The only caveat to that would be I would tell him, and my colleague, if you make the baseball team, no spring football. You're not going to practice, you're not going to the jamboree, you don't practice with your 7-on-7 team, you're a baseball player until the season is over. Conversely, I won't expect you to come to Fall baseball workouts. |

Okay Allstar....let's say you have two players. Player A is the best short stop you have ever seen...Player B is decent at the position, but not great.
Player A plays football in Fall and does not attend most practices. Player B is at every team practice.
In your fall games/scrimmages/etc. which player gets to play, the one that is the best at that spot, or the one that has shown up for ALL practices? |

I'm not Allstar, but not only would I not expect this player to show up to any fall baseball activities, I would not want him to. Reason being, he is probably not working on keeping his arm in shape and I would not want him to get hurt over throwing when he is not ready.
Besides, in Georgia, there technically is no HS fall season. A HS coach cannot coach any games or practices for his HS players in the fall. He can't be involved in any baseball related activities with his players for that matter. I say let the kid play football. No point in over extending him by playing two sports in the same season.
AND if he is the best SS I've ever seen, he's going to be my starting SS in the spring regardless of what he does or doesn't do in the fall. |

Y'all are talking about 2 different things...travel baseball vs HS baseball.

I saw Fall High School games this past Fall, so yes...there are Fall High School Teams. They may not be "official" games, or "official" teams, and not coached by the "real" coach but there are games.
So, the Football guy would just be excused from all Fall Baseball? |

Yes, and not just football. Anyone playing a HS fall season sport would not participate in fall HS baseball in schools that play (not all HS's have fall teams). Likewise in spring with basketball players, swimmers, wrestlers, etc. They don't officially participate with any spring teams (baseball, soccer, track, lax) until their winter sport completes. We have a few basketball players who may hang out around a baseball practice or two right now, but they aren't required or expected to participate while their primary season sport is underway.
Now if a baseball player is participating on his fall travel team ahead of his fall HS team, there may be some raising of eyebrows. |

No real football player would miss football games or football practice to play baseball where "the real coach" and the games are "not official". It is real simple, like AllStar said, in the Fall play football. The fastest way to lose a great baseball player is to tell him that he can no longer play other sports because he must participate in meaningless Fall baseball games. I say this as a dad of a baseball player that does not play football and a baseball coach who see's Fall for what it is, spring training for the upcoming season. I love Fall baseball but it has its place. |

My son is currently in the 8th grade and plays basketball. Do most high school's have some type of fall baseball workouts for Freshmen? He is really wanting to play basketball in high school, however baseball is his first love (and his best sport) and he is afraid of being penalized in baseball for playing basketball. |

Since no one else will say it, I will. If it's any of the names I mentioned above, heck no I could care less about him being at fall practice. IF I was the baseball Coach I'd be in the stands wearing his football jersey cheering him on and saying, "can't wait to see you on the baseball field kid!". That's better than being the Coach that caused a kid to transfer schools so he can play multiple sports for your rival, only to watch him get drafted in the 1st round by the Cardinals. That Coach better practice his "Welcome to Wal-Mart" speech... |

What I don't understand is the HS coach who demands a kid play with the HS team in the summer and fall when we play better competition and get better exposure on our travel teams. |

If a HS coach "demands" you play summer ball for him, just ask him to send you an email, so you can get your fees back from your summer team. Guess won't ... he won't ... he can't according to GHSA rules. Play where you want ... if you're a top end player, he's not going to penalize you when his season comes around ! |

Ours doesn't demand it. He gets it. That's why 2/3 of the roster plays for either ECB or TE and 2/3 are D1 signs/commits. |

My 15 year old son goes to a Forsyth County high school and our baseball coach has the 9th grade team play the first month of summer (June) together and then releases the players to go back to their travel team for the remainder of the summer. Although this is in conflict with good portion of the travel baseball season it doesn't completely prohibit someone from practicing/playing with their travel team as many of the HS games are during the week not the weekend. It does, however, limit a players ability to attend out of town tournaments.
The 10th-12th grade high school players can play on any team they wish and are not required to do anything with the high school once the season is over. |

BallisLife - That's good to know since my son is zoned for North Gwinnett High School. What their opinion of kids playing multiple sports? |

Something tells me ballislife isn't talking about North Gwinnett HS. He said in North Gwinnett and that they had a good football team. This sounds more like Buford. |

@BCM - He may be talking about Burford but North has a pretty good football program. |

I would like to see Buford and North Gwinnett play each other again in football and baseball. Both teams are very good! |

I would too! A big shout out to McKeachern for scheduling Buford in football. Not many big schools are willing to take that risk. |
