2000.00 for fall and summer or just summer? I have spent 200.00 on rec and 1500.00 on bad summer team and 500.00 on Rec allstar team. Now I would think for a good organization with a proven record that 2k is a bargin. |

My nephew played on a team last year where the budget was never disclosed to the families involved. The coach played his son pretty much every inning of every game...............That is as bad as it gets regardless of how much you pay.
Advice: play for a team without a dad coach. That way, when you pay your fees, at least you know your son is playing on a level playing field. Much easier to take the compulsory costs. |

Not sure what age group you are talking about, but not providing a budget is bad stuff whether it's a dad coached team or not.
On the topic of dad coaches:
1) A couple of the most successful teams in my son's age group were coached by dads. I don't know how fair or not they were about playing time, but their records were very good all the way up to 17U.
2) Having outside coaches doesn't guarantee a level playing field. You can see that in a large number of posts on this board.
3) How many teams would there be in your age group if dads didn't step up, volunteer a boatload of time and coach teams? I know when my son was 11 we played one team in 54 games that was actively coached by outside coaches. At 12 it was only about 6 or 7 games out of 51 and that's because we played the 12U EC Astros 3 times.
Sounds like your nephew had an unfortunate experience, but great lessons learned for next year. |

My son plays travel ball and has for 10 years, he just turned 17 and will play two more years with NBS. We have played for ECB and several others, not 643 and our approach has always been for the team that offers the best fit for him to play rather than the name on the jersey. Some kids and parents just cannot seem to cope without having that "badge" regardless of if the kid plays. We have found that NBS offers competitve fees and prepares the kids for the possibilities of college baseball. Frankly, most travel ball players will not play D1 baseball much less get scholarships from a D1. Our son was just offerd 55% from a D1 as a rising junior (he will get acamdemic $$ too once he takes the SAT/ACT) and we look at the expenses related to his travel all over the years as an investment in him, his character and development as a young man, and ultimately in preparing him to get money from a D1 school and offset the college expenses. If your kid loves the game and wants to play, pay for him to play and set your egos aside folks.....if he is good enough to play college ball he will get offers, if not he can always try to prefrred walk-on approach. |

Funny hop, My experience has been just the opposite of yours. dad coaches were great for the most part, paid coaches cow towed to the one doing the paying. Playing time has never been an issue on any team but there are many more issues besides playing time that the money affects that can make for a horrible experience. |

Oops, sorry. I should have been more specific.
My nephew plays in the older age groups (high school age). He and his parents say that their travel experience in the younger age groups were all coached by great and dedicated dads. If it were not for them, travel ball would not exist. They all shared the budget.
The last year he played for a HS age team coached by a dad who had no business coaching at that level. He was in way over his head. The budget was not shared with anyone.
Also, not quite sure how a coach "cow tows" to an entity (read family) on a team where everyone pays. Doesn't everyone pay the same amount.........yeah right!!
Bottom line: do your homework......and even that does not always equate to a nice experience. |
