Is anyone aware of a glove insert (or any piece of equipment) that a catcher can use to protect the back of his glove hand from injury if hit by the batter? I've been looking for something rigid..like an Evoshield piece.

They make batting gloves with padding on the back to protect when hand if hit by a pitch, which could be used by a catcher.

(My coaching opinion on this has always been that if you have enough occurrences to require protection regularly, you need to look at how close to the plate you are setting up or whether you are stabbing at the pitch when it comes in. Normally a catcher should never have this happen. At best it only occurs very rarely. I would recommend looking at the problem and not protecting around the symptoms, but that is not what you asked.)

You should be able to find those batting gloves in most of the larger sporting goods stores.

The alternative is to take one of the evoshield wrist guards and take the hard protection mold out of it and form it for the back of your hand. Then insert it inside your normal batting glove.

Buy the Evoshield batting gloves. they have the hard carbonesque piece in them to protect a batters front hand, you can just wear one underneath the glove. retail around 59.99

The best glove I have seen is from xprotek. It was black and yellow and made specifically for catchers. The problem is that they discontinued it and now just has an in-mitt protection. I saw some on ebay (mens large and x-large)...

The new ones may be good but I just haven't actually used the new ones.

The black/yellow will last about half a season.

Thanks Nasty. I saw those at Better Baseball a couple of weeks back. There is a youtube demo of a guy getting his hand hit with a hammer while wearing the glove....I guess that's one way of showing off a product. I picked up a pair..well made and they do provide good protection.
