I'm interested in how other teams are addressing the weather issue this weekend. We are scheduled to play and it appears that most tournaments in the area are NOT going to be cancelled.
This puts head coaches in a tough spot...some families may feel it is too cold others want to play like other teams...
What is the general thought about playing this weekend?... |

It's going to be too cold (IMHO) for baseball this weekend - especially the morning games, but tournaments won't be cancelled. Too much $$ involved.

| As much as we hate to play in the cold, it is what it is with the weather. Problem is that kids get sick and then you end up short later in tourney because of it. Like Chin said, too much money to cancel for teams hosting tourneys for fundraisers or directors to cancel. Someone needs to win the powerball and build a multi field dome :) |

| We play select soccer, softball, and football at freezing temps. Why all of a sudden this talk when we have been doing it for years? Its March what do you expect?Ifyou pull out you lose money. If you think your kid cant handle it then you pull him. Under Armour and Omni heat worn under 55 great stuff. Get the nike skull cap covers head,ears,neck,and mouth. Kids that play football, soccer, and lacross will have no problem at these temps unless the wind is blowing. Cowboy up and try to have fun. Good thing uses guys dont live up North A? |

| I saw teams with the tall patio heaters in their dugouts too to keep the boys warm between innings...just an idea. |

better break out the old bats, it could cost 300.00 per hit this weekend |

| I have a 9 AM and it looks to be 36 with wind. Wish it would at least delay or cancel. Watn to play, but it is just to cold. |

Demand has driven the scheduling of tournaments in Feb and March. Any team signing up for tournaments in Feb and Mar are doing so to get playing time in, not for ideal weather conditions. They should all know that you will have to play 1-2 games in the cold (on Fri night and/or Sat night) in order to get 1-2 games in decent weather (during the day on Sat and/or Sun).
If temperature is a big factor, you should wait until April 1st, to start playing. Even then there is no guarantee a cold snap or storm won't come rolling in.
You could almost argue the complete temperature opposite in July/Aug. During mid-day in July and Aug, it is brutal. No one seems to bat an eye at that. Maybe cold weather is just harder to escape than hot weather.
Unlike High School Baseball, where where you can't opt out of playing when it is cold, in travel you can choose to wait and start a little later in the season.
After many years of playing in Feb/Mar, stock up on the following:
* Hand/feet Warmers
* skull cap/toboggan
* pullover that can be played in
* batting gloves
* portable heater to keep in the dugout
* last year's bats
Other than that, there is not much you can do but tough through it.

When I was coaching 12 YOs I pulled our team out of a tournament that refused to cancel. Got a really snotty reply from the TD about 1:30 in the morning. Told him too bad, my players weren't playing in the forecasted weather (highs of 31 I believe, 24 at our scheduled start time) and if he felt the need to, keep our fees.
The parents supported me, the kids were relieved and the sun came up the next day.
I would have paid the fee myself if the parents had raised a stink, but they didn't.
We never played his tournament again, which was disappointing because we finished 4th out of 36 the year before and were really looking forward to it.
We actually started waiting until at least the third weekend of March to start playing tournaments. Played single games and DH's as much as possible. |

| Played 5 this past weekend, Wrapped the dugout with tarp, had 3 heaters, handwarmers, all kids had team hoodie sweat shirts and sleeves, used metal bats. Played at 3 and 5 on saturday, and 1, 3 and 6:30 on Sunday. The Championship game on Sunday got kind of brutal, but effected the parents and coaches more than the kids. The kids did great in the weather and went 5-0. |
