What happens as the boys get older and into high school?

Many top players in the middle age groups (12-14) are May/June birthdays, and often a grade higher than most of the players in that age group.

When they get into high school and make their JV or Varsity school teams, do they still play down an age group for summer/travel teams?

Wondering what people see for the top teams.

Some do, but after 15u season, most 16u major teams play up at 17-18, so it doesn't really make much difference.

My son fell into that category. He has a May birthday so he was always one of the older, bigger kids on his team. Each year we thought about moving up an age group. We just did that at age 13. We went from 12u to 14u this fall. For us, that was perfect. Up though age 12, it really is about having fun. He got to go back to Cooperstown at 12 with kids he had been playing with since he was 8. And he had a ball. Would he have improved more if he had played 13 last year? I think he would have, but I also think he may have decided that baseball was not fun any more and he really did not want to put in the effort.

Now, as an 8th grader, he knows he needs to work if he wants to make the freshman team next year. We have been lucky enough to find a 14u majors team where he will be able to have fun, play competitive ball and yes, improve his skills.

So in short, up though age 12, play where he has the most fun.

Play with your grade. Especially when it gets to Junior year. But my feeling is when you get to high school, play with the age associated with your grade.
