My son just moved into the 14U division in Travel Ball and now has to have a totally new bat because of the bat rule changes. I have mixed feelings about the BBCOR bats and have seen other kids hit with them and they just don't seem to have much pop. I'm hearing that a really good wood bat has better pop to it than the new $300 metal or composite bats. Any ideas, thoughts or recommendations before I go drop that kind of money? |

At 14u you don't need BBCOR unless you're playing 15u and up tourneys |

Some leagues require bbcor. Saw a lot of kids cut in the past 2 weeks making solid contact but didn't really know how to hit. The bat really doesn't need to do ALL the work. |

BBCOR is only mandatory for 15 and up... Try a -5 1.15 bps bat. You can find the marucci cat 5 pretty cheap and its got a ton of pop. Get a same length wood bat as you will bbcor to get him used to swinging that weight. Once he's used to it, try out a few different bbcors til you find what he likes and go with that(mine swings the easton S1). Wood bat cant come close to the pop and swing of a BBCOR. |

I know this is a travel baseball forum, but you still have people looking at it that play rec. Many rec programs for Pony(13-14) leagues require BBCOR or wood. I know where we played they do, as do most of the programs around us. Definitely have your son try out a few. They don't all feel the same. |

I had received this from the coach regarding certain Tournament Organizations..
Triple Crown Rules
12. 2011 Bat Rules: 13u and Younger: No bat restrictions (must be a “Baseball” bat). 14u Only: -5 or -3 weight/length differential allowed. All -3 bats must be BESR or BBCOR certified. All composite bats with BESR or BBCOR stamp are allowed for 2011. 15u and Older: Must use -3 bat with BESR or BBCOR certification. All composite bats with BESR or BBCOR stamp are allowed for 2011.
Grandslam rules
BATS: Must be a baseball bat. All wood bats that are not altered or defective are legal. BBCOR bats are legal unless otherwise banned by the NFHS Association. Composite bats must have a BPF rating of 1.15 and are legal for all age divisions up to and including 13U regardless of Weight/Length ratio unless otherwise banned by the NFHS Association. The 14U age group is restricted to a Weight/Length ratio of -3 or -5. The 15U and above age divisions are restricted to BBCOR bats with a Weight/Length ratio of -3. Any batter that enters the batters box with an illegal bat or uses an illegal bat and it is determined to be illegal prior to any pitch to the next batter, the batter will be called out and the bat will be removed from the game. The head coach will be restricted to the dugout for the remainder of the game. On the second violation, the coach will be ejected from the game. If in the umpires judgement, the player knowingly uses an illegal bat, he will also be ejected from the game.

You received bad info on the Triple Crown rules.
Info below is copied directly from their website as the current bat rules for their first Georgia tournament (Spring Frost, 3/1 - 3/3). No mention of BESR. You can use BBCOR in all age groups, but it isn't required until 15.
So as you can see in all sanctioning bodies, BBCOR is not required until the 15u season.
With respect to rec leagues, the OP specifically stated that they are playing travel, so I would assume that they weren't asking about Rec.
Triple Crown Bat Rules 13u and Younger: All bats -5 or greater must be stamped BPF 1.15. Must be a baseball bat – no restriction on weight or length as long as bat has “BPF 1.15” stamp. All -3 bats must be stamped BBCOR. Wood bats allowed. 14u: -5 or -3 weight/length ratio. All -5 bats must be stamped BPF 1.15. All -3 bats must be stamped BBCOR. Wood bats allowed. 15u and Older: -3 weight/length ratio only. All bats must be stamped BBCOR. Wood bats allowed.
19u: To be considered a wood bat , a bat must be made of a single piece of wood. All other bats such as bamboo or two piece must meet the BBCOR standards and have the BBCOR stamp.

I thought all the organizations had a -5 or less restriction for 14U. If I am reading their rules correctly, in USSSA, a kid in 14U can still use a drop 10. |

Make em 14U and up go to bbcor simple solution. Going back to 60.6 should be fine for most. Heck they even make a 31 inch drop 3.

As ridiculous as it is, you are reading it correctly. 15u and above requires BBCOR or wood, 14u and below requires 1.15 USSSA new stamp (which includes all the drops up to -10), BBCOR or wood.

If a 14u kid wants to play HS ball, he would be well advised to go ahead and start swinging a -3 BBCOR and begin making the adjustment. The difference in the "pop" and the smaller sweet spot on a BBCOR bat are obvious and it will take a lot of swings to adjust. Sure, its going to make a difference in how far he hits the ball, and it will cost him some hits this spring. But who cares? You want to be ready for HS ball. Its going to be hard to hit a BBCOR if you just pick it up and go to your HS rising 9th grade camps in late May. If you don't plan on trying to make the HS summer team as a rising 9th grader, then you at least have the Fall to get used to the BBCOR and -3 weight. |
