So how do the tournaments merge and competition compare between the 17U and 18U summers
We are hearing that the falls are bout the same as less players are active but what about the summer when the teams are in full swing |

More colleges looking at 17u, more pro looking at 18u. By 18u, most colleges are figuring the guys who are going to play in college have already committed. Pro scouts are still looking. Most teams that I know of sometimes struggle to get enough 18's to play because most 18's are committed already. Unless they are out there trying to keep in shape for the fall college season, most are resting up or have other priorities and the summer 18 season is a hit or miss kind of thing. |

bballman is right on. A lot of 18's (or graduating seniors) that have already made their college commitment and won't be swayed by a late round draft choice are heading straight to summer classes and workouts at their college of choice. Get a jump on things and get into the fold of college life. Most college coaches strongly encourage this of entering freshmen as it's much easier to integrate and learn their way around campus during the calm summer session than the hectic fall session with all the distractions.
This leaves the 18's summer travel circuit something of a crapshoot. |

ROB: My impression is that most of the tournaments in summer are actually 17+18U combined
For reasons already stated about many of the 18s being off and gone away from travel ball.Myself tho I would like to know if that is true
Do see where perfect game does has a separate 17U and 18u tournament

It's true. We have been there and seen it. When my son was 17, his team often combined 17's and 18's in many of the tournaments they entered. When he was 18, he didn't play, prefering to rest his arm for fall college. There were a lot of guys on his 18 team that were nursing injuries and sorness as well that opted not to play. Many other guys were hit and miss in terms of showing up. There were times the 18u team entered tournaments as an 18u team themselves, but many times, they were combined.
Seen the same thing on a lot of teams. Alot of times you would see a team that would generally be an 18u team, but really were a combined 17 & 18 team. They would enter the 18u tournaments and then go into 17u tournaments as well - the 18 year olds just couldn't play in those tournaments.
There were some 18u kids that continued to play all summer. These were usually position players, and most were guys that had not committed yet. They were still trying to find a spot during the summer after their senior year. Not all, but quite a few. Pitchers would generally come to games just when they were going to pitch. It really is a different world once you have committed to play college ball. The pressure is off. You are either just trying to stay in shape for the fall, or you are trying to rest up a weary arm.
You will find as your kids get older, that teams are entering into all kinds of tournaments in multiple age groups. When my son was 15, his team was in the 15, 16, 17 & 18 WWBA tournaments. At 16, he was in the 16,17 & 18 tournaments. You will find that a lot in the older age groups with the better teams. |

Now I dont understand it - does this mean 17 year old and 18 year old tournaments are combined in summer aka 17-18s
Or are they seperate tournaments ? |

The big WWBA PG tournaments are separate 17 & 18 tournaments. Triple Crown tournaments go from 16u to 18u, so they are essentially 17 & 18 combined. Those are really the only "organization" type tournaments held - at least that we got involved in. The other things that you enter are usually showcase type tournaments at colleges, sponsored by either the college or by a team and held at a college. These are 17 & 18 combined. So the answer is sometimes they are separate, but very often, they are combined 17 & 18. |
