Looking for suggestions regarding speed specific training. Looking to improve on 60 time. Player is a corner IF (primarily 1B). 60 times range between 7.5 - 7.63 at various showcases. He would like to get it down into 7.25 - 7.4 range.
He's 6'01" 185..good build...so its not a weight issue.....
Is this doable?? Probable? Impossible??

He's been through speed/agility training in the past (a couple of years ago). Seemed to be alot of lifting, ladder work, box jumps, etc...but never really saw any work on the mechanics of sprinting.

Kid has a great glove, a big bat and a strong work ethic....he really wants to improve this part of his game.

Any suggestions, names of instructors/programs, or your success stories would be greatly appreciated.

Heres what you do:
Step 1 Go to a football field.
Step 2 put junior on the 10 yard line with a steak in his pocket
Step 3 put a hungry pit bull in the endzone
Step 4 Let dog loose.
Step 5 Let Junior loose
End result: Speed will increase

No seriously, the best thing I did with my son was have him sprint up stairs. We have a 24 step staircase (12 up and then 12 over) and I would have him sprint up the stairs as fast as he could. The theory being that it makes him pick up his feet and go up whereas on a baseball field hes going to be running flat. My son went from a big power hitter with no speed to a power hitter that regularly steals second.

I like the steak idea. Another option is a parachute. Strap it on him, get on the football field, have him sprint 40 walk 40. Turn around and do it again. Speed will increase quickly. Good luck.

i dont think this is ez but it can be done. going from 7.5-7.2 is plausible but there are so many factors involved. like how old is your son and has he matured into his body. its not just about the mechanics of running its also about strength in the core and lower half as well as creating more high twitch muscle fiber. and thats from a me as a layman. i have seen a number of trainers and been involved with them on a business and personal level. most will tell you that they and they alone have the secret sauce. the ones who dont give you that line are the ones to trust. mike berenger at rapid performance is one of those guys. and he works with a ton of baseball guys so he understands the sport. its rapidsportsperforamnce.com

Heavy Squats believe it or not. There are also ways to cheat the clock well not cheat but give an advantage to your son when running. Also purchase a pair of track shoes with the metal spikes and have him run in those. I am Serious. I believe you can shave some time off of his time wont be a ton but it should make a difference

Thanks guys for all the guidance and advice. If I take the steak approach, I'm assuming that a cheaper cut will do?

I guess I'm looking for the most efficient way to (as Hit/Run put it) "cheat the clock". He's already in strength training 3X per week, see's his hitting instructor 1X per week and is playing a full fall schedule...He'll be wrapping up in mid-late October, so maybe then I can get him in with a trainer.
