Runner on 3rd attempting to steal home, does he need to slide if there is a play? All I can find is that he must attempt to avoid contact. Our parents (and a couple coaches) thought he HAD to slide or he was out... Thoughts?

(12U Dizzy Dean rules State tournament)

9:09 Any runner is out when he does not slide or attempt to avoid the fielder who has
the ball in the proximity of the base and is waiting to make the tag, or if he
maliciously runs into a fielder.

Yes Peashooter this was your runner stealing home on us!

Sliding provides the presumption of attempting to avoid contact or malicious contact in most rulesets. If you don't slide, you're leaving it to the ump's judgement. I would think it would be hard to steal home so cleanly that there wouldn't be some kind of play, though under that DD rule it sounds like the catcher/fielder isn't protected attempting to receive the ball even on a bad/late throw (which seems wrong, maybe there's a separate rule that covers that?).
