Ok, new here and want to see if anyone can put to bed the controversy over kids playing golf and baseball. My 10yr old loves baseball and is pretty good; however he also wants to get into golf. He has taken a few lessons with US Kids golf and is wanting to do it again, but friends and old coaches are scaring us to death about playing golf and baseball. Does this really mess up your swing? Will he be able to recover for fall? Thanks in advance for the inputs.

| I wouldn't worry about it. There is a book out there somewhere that talks about the similarities between the golf swing and the baseball swing. Supposedly, it is almost the same other than the plane it is on, partially due to upper torso angle. Do a google search on the topic and you should get some answers. |

| I would say playing both poses far more detriment to his golf swing than baseball. Anyone who has played golf has made the unfortunate "baseball swing" on the course. Nasty slice will always result. Tweaking a golf swing is far more sensitive than a baseball swing and will fall by the wayside far quicker than the baseball swing. |

Yes PLEASE help me end this argument with dear hubby. It annoys me to no end for him to compare a baseball swing with a golf swing. The golf ball isn't likely to veer off the ground and hit you in the head going 90 mph! My son is annoyed with the comparisons also.
Re Smoltz and Glavine? They pitched mostly, however, maybe they can always say they didn't hit bc they didn't want to screw up their golf swings. |

Great topic and I don't see a problem with playing both. The golf swing uses a lot of the same concepts as the baseball swing. You have to stay relatively "short" to the ball and take the butt end of the club/bat to the ball. The only difference I really see is the weight shift; may be a little more pronounced in a baseball swing but differs from kid to kid and as bballman said the swing plane. I have started both of my kids (8 yrs. & 5 yrs.) playing last year and teach them to swing the club like a baseball swing and bend at the waist. As they grow older, I'm sure we will refine it but I try to keep it simple and fun right now.
Doing both never messed my swing up but as with any skill sport you have to put in the work to get better and understand the nuances of the swings. I'm glad my father started me at both sports at the age of 5 because 1)I got to play an individual sport and a team sport and 2) taught me a game (golf) I can play a lifetime. I feel the pressures of junior tournament golf at a young age helped me with my focus in pressure situations when pitching/hitting in baseball.
For anyone interested, check out Cobblestone Golf Course in Cobb County for their monthly Parent/Child scramble tournament. 9 hole scramble with dinner and prizes. Great way to spend some time on the links with your kids. Sorry to ramble on and hope this helps. |

I played both growing up and I think the benefits out weigh the risks. The main question is how good is your kid at making adjustments to his baseball swing. If you notice something can he correct? Can he self correct? If not you may find his baseball swing becomes more of an upper cut. That was the minor problem I had but it wasn't a big deal because I knew when I did it and could correct it.
It also depends if his golf swing is good or bad and if his baseball swing is good or bad. I think if you do both correctly (IE quick hands on the inside, you will be fine) BIG IFF though! |

Thanks for all the great info. I had a gut feeling that a little smoke was being puffed up the wrong orifice, but I had to ask. Both my boys (6 & 10) want to play more golf,I just was a little reluctant in the beginning. Again, thanks and you never know we may see you all on the field.

Uhhh, not going to the Hall because of their bats. I am sure both of these guys took more cuts on the range than in the cage. I would also be willing to bet that they took their golf swings more serious than their bat swings. Watch the celebrity golf events. Former pitchers seem to do very well in golf. I think it is because they tend to be more focused on technique and form. Also, hockey players tend to be very good golfers too. Powerful pinpoint accurate swings "shots". Reps reps reps. Practice practice practice. |

They aren't the same, they cant be.
I don't think they are that dissimilar, other than the plane and degree of what I see.
Similarities:
Front leg braced
Back leg with bend
Both arms fully extended
Hips facing the target
I think if you took Tiger and had him swing on a baseball plane, they would be very much alike.
And yes, bigmcbb, I would not really use pitchers as the example. Although I remember those Braves pitchers being VERY competitive with their batting amongst each other, that's not how they made their living.
