| my son is 13 years old and needs a new bat. he is on the smaller side at 105lbs. some people say he has quick hands but i dont know how to tell.i am looking for info on if he should use a drop -5 or move to a drop -3. also what name brand bat...i dont want one that is end heavy.can anyone add light on this problem. |

| I would recommend going somewhere to demo bats. We had a bat in mind for my son this season but decided to go to demo bats and we ended up with a completely different bat and size than originally planned after swinging multiple bat companies and sizes. |

Totally agree with Marlin. Had exact same experience this year with demo bats.
Also, I've had 3 boys go through travel, and this year is my youngest's 13U season. You'll hear a lot of people say that you need to move into BBCOR as soon as possible. I agree, as long the kid can handle the size.
Two of my kids used -8 at 13U because it was the right size for them ... they were both on the smaller end of the scale, but both good hitters.
My middle son was bigger and stronger at 13U and used a -5.
For the next 3 years (13U - 15U), boys grow an amazing amount and all of them at different times/rates. Swinging a -8 @ 13U does not mean he will struggle with BBCOR when he gets to high school.
My biggest recommendation ... get the bat that he can swing CORRECTLY now. |

My son is average sized at 105 lbs, but below average for 13U travel baseball. I bought a brand new still in the wrapper 2011 model illegal drop 3 Worth Copperhead (aluminum) bat to train with for $20 at a used sporting goods store. The plan was to use that bat for training, then borrow older bigger boys drop 5's during games. The Worth is evenly balanced so doesn't feel as heavy as the other brands. I'll spend the $200-$300 next Spring for a legal bat.
My son has quick hands too. How do I know? First of all, he can hit it up the middle on hard throwing pitchers' fast balls, and secondly, a coach he had used a swing gun on his bat speed. |
