I guess I've gotten spoiled over the years with my older boys travel teams because they were so organized. One of my younger boys started playing on a travel team this year with a very unorganized coach. I have been trying to just ride the waves of last minute practices, last minute out of town tournaments, last minute uniform changes. I realize this is his first year coaching travel ball but he has several parents and assistant coaches that have done this for a couple years and he seems closed to taking advice. My plan was to bite my tongue until the season finished and when it was time for the discussion about next year tell him but lately it has gotten worse. Is there a way to bring this up without it sounding like I don't appreciate him volunteering his time?

Bring it up, but also provide a solution. Coach, I will do all the planning for you. Pointing out problems doesn't help anyone, always have some ideas to fix the problems.

Great point... When I was in the AF I had a tech sgt that instilled this into us - if you bring a problem, bring at least 2 suggestions how to fix it... I've carried it from then and as I've managed people have used it as one of my golden rules both in work and in life.

But sometimes, guys are just not going to change. Since you said it's his first season coaching travel ball, chalk it up to inexperience, so approach him in a casual manner, non threatening manner. And remember, the best way to instill change is to make them think it's their idea..

We've been on both ends of the spectrum, and noticed it doesn't change much over time. A few Coaches will allow others to help them out to some extent, but for the most part, things don't change. If you cant live with it, don't return.
