Just curious; how many travel players will also try out for thier middle school team this year? Are most of the kids who try out AA, AAA or major? |

I don't know about that but I would have to guess most are 9th graders. |

Our team is at AA level, and several of our boys are trying out for middle school teams. Probably means we won't be active in tournaments until mid-April. |

I don't know of any around here, but at least when my wife was in school in MN 20ish years ago, they did 7th-9th as MS and 10th-12th as HS (presumably JV HS sports shared a player pool with the MS). |

Hey DecaturDad, wheres your boy go? Mine is at Chapel Hill, and most of their first team players are on our travel squad also. What Ive seen in Middle school is that most teams have one or two high AAA/Major type players and then it falls off totally after that into a lot of AA/low AAA players.
The kids usually have a lot of fun playing middle school as its less stressful, but the game speed adn talent level dont come close to travel. |

In the East Cobb area, MS is grades 6-8 and I'm not aware of any MS teams. No 9th grade team in HS either - just JV and Varsity |

There are a number of Middle School Feeder teams. Here is a link to the North Georgia Feeder Team Legue. It will give you an idea about what schools around here have feeder teams.

I assumed the "feeder" teams were considered to be the middle school teams for grades 6-8. When I was in high school, too many years ago, we had a 9th grade, JV, and a varsity team. Has this changed? |

I was curious about that also, my son goes to Wesleyan and they have a combined 8th and 7th grade team for middle school. They play other private schools in the area. They play about 20 games per season so you have to supplement with another team. Has anyone else encountered this and does your current travel team understand and put up with playing for your ms team? |

Feeder teams are just another form of rec balland most have absolutly nothing to do with the high school program. Middle school in Ga goes to 8th grade , most high schools dont have a 9th grade team. In our school and county JV starts in 10th grade , at least in the schools I know about in cherokee/cobb county.

In south dekalb county, each school puts together a team and they play each other, we also play against some of the dunwoody schools. Ive seen it both ways with some coaches deferring to the middle school as the season is so short and some putting their program above the middle school. From what I've seen, middle school isnt quite on the same level as travel ball, but the kids like it. If a large part of the team is playing middle school, coaches usually are understanding, but if you have a younger team, they will keep it moving and just fit you in when you get back. |

BBall123, If your JV starts at 10th grade, what do the 9th grade kids do? We are in Cobb county, and of the 60+ kids trying out for High School about 25 of them are 9th graders. You are right though, no 9th grade team, just Varsity and JV. |

thats a good question, we are going to 9th grade this coming year, I was told by the head coach that they had something like 94 10th graders trying out for JV so there was no need to pick up upcoming 9th graders. I felt the same way, that left 9th graders out,but because of time constraints and a shortage of money and facility's there are no 9th grade teams.
I guess they play travel ball . |

just curious, with that many sophomores trying out, what is the enrollment at the school.
Our high school plays AAA and I bet they have never had any where near 90 kids total at a tryout. |

We are a 5-AAAAA , Im not sure of the enrolment, i would guess 2000. Our school has a very large component of travel ball players in every age group. just in 8th rising 9th there are more than 20 major level travel ballers, this bodes well for the future of the program. |

bballguy, Both my boys played in the Middle School league (which is out of Dunwoody Senior baseball). Most of the schools are private, although a few public schools participate. The A teams' distances are 60/90 (played on the upper field); the B-D teams' are at 54/80. Our school fields two teams (A and B divisions, usually); some schools field only 1 team. You'll need to check with the coaches to see where your school is seeded. The field size for the B-D teams is the same as Pony, so there's no change there. The A teams' field is only a transition for pitchers, but after a game or two, they all adjusted. As to quality of competition, it depends on which class your son's team is seeded in: A teams are about equal to a good travel team; D teams are really weak; and depending on the year, B teams can be almost as good as the A teams (or substantially below). The season's only 12 games long, with a week or so of playoffs following, so it's over by the 2d week of April. Have fun. |

Outside of private schools, I don't know of any Cobb County middle schools that have a team. There are some high school feeder teams for middle school ages, but those are basically travel teams that are comprised of middle schoolers within a certain high school district.
There has been an effort to organize those feeder teams to play some league games against one another, but other than a portion of the dues funding the high school booster club, there isn't alot of involvement from the high school, and no involvement whatsoever from any middle school. In fact, since most high schools are fed from more than one middle school, these feeder teams consist of players from multiple middle schools with the emphasis on the high school districting serving as the boundaries.
