What is the best number of players to have on a 9U team? Our team has 11 players this year and we are looking to add one more player if we find a perfect fit. Will 12 players be too many to manage?
If you plan on playing a very active schedule of 60+ games, your team is strong within their class level (high AA,AAA,Majors) so go deep a lot on Sundays, and the 12 player is a solid pitcher, it could help your team. Otherwise, stick with 11.
It really depends on the team/parents/expectations because the more players, the more potential playing time issues/concerns. Might prevent you from picking up kids if they know 3 are sitting..
I agree with older ages - 12 is good as you start to build a bullpen and carrying extra pitchers/catchers is ideal in a 60+ game schedule..
Seems like the age group +1 or 2 is always good until they are 15U then the roster grows. So at 9U you should probably have 10 or 11 players but if your playing the big tournaments at the higher levels (AAA or Majors) then 12 would not be a bad thing as long as those extra kids are pitchers. If they don't pitch or can take the positions of the ones that do then you don't need them and playing time will be an issue.
We will likely add a 12th player if he significantly helps our team; otherwise, we will keep just 11. Our team will play approx 60 games in 2012. Thanks for the input.
