rippit...you are spot on. the only time I have EVER called a runner out on that rule was 2 yrs ago and I cant even remember the play, but all i remember is R2 coming to 3B trips on the bag and is on the ground unaware of the play going on behind him. 3BC grabs his shirt and pulls him up telling him to go. That is what the rule is meant to cover...not some high 5. |

Anyway, it's amazing that coaches and/or umpires can't use common sense and just be good sports in certain situations.
Just win, baby.....

An 8 year old running across the diamond thinks he's being nice cause his mommy told him to by picking up the ball and tossing it to his pitcher. A coach or an umpire who sees it as anything else needs to find something else to do.
Well said. |

I have only had to make the assisting the runner call once. The 3BC tugged on the runners shirt to get him to return to third base, and then, after an overthrow, pushed him lightly toward home. High fives etc are NOT assisting the runner. As seminole tony said, Refs should use the rule in the nature of the game as it was intended. I also coach rec ball, and had a kid called out after a base hit single. The throw from shortstop pulled the first baseman off the bag and into my players path, causing the runner to touch the inside of the bag and continue down the right field line in fair territory. The runner immediately turned and started walking back to first in FAIR territory, maybe a foot inside the line. He was tagged and called out. *NOTE I know we all teach the kids to break down, look for the ball and then return to the bag, but nowhere in the rules (that I can find) does it say the player MUST turn to his right or risk being tagged out while returning to first. |

I believe as long as you don't attempt to go to 2nd base you can be completely in fair territory running down the line and not be called out. |

Saw this in a 9U game last year, runners on 1st and 3rd with one out called 3rd strike 1b coach starts yelling toward the batter and catcher Go to 1! Go to 1! The batter knew he was out but started running as the 1b coach kept yelling trying to draw a throw and score the run from 3rd. The coach from the other team told he catcher to throw back to the pitcher which he did then both coaches gave the look to one another, I think we know the look.
I do like the "Miami" play as long as coaches and fans stay out of it, I look at it as a well coached pick play if done right. |
