Ok..so we have our first middle school game of the season and the umpires asked to see all bats - his statement after looking at the bats is that all Composite bats are illegal now and cannot be used. 3 bats from our team and 5 bats from the opponents team were disallowed. I know the standard is now BBCOR bats but I keep seeing on the list bats with the BESR rating that have also been tested and now are allowed. Anyone else having issues and would bringing the list of approved bats to each game accomplish anything?

Composite-barreled baseball bats will not be allowed in the 2010/11 season of high school baseball.
The National Federation of State High School Associations issued the moratorium on the use of composite-barreled baseball bats last summer.
It applies to all baseball bats with composite barrels, with some exceptions (listed below). Bats with aluminum, alloy or wood barrels will still be allowed, as will bats with composite tapers and/or handles.
The NFHS has banned composite-barreled baseball bats in high school competition
Composite bats are designed to play similar to wooden and aluminum bats. However, through normal usage, composite-barreled bats can fall out of compliance with the NFHS’s bat performance standard (the BESR).
The ban will remain in effect until Jan. 1, 2012, when the NFHS adopts the BBCOR bat performance standard. For more info on that, click here.
Some composite-barreled bats have been re-approved for NFHS play. Those bats are:[/yellow]

* Louisville Slugger’s TPX Triton Adult Baseball Bat (Model No. CBXT)
* Louisville Slugger’s TPX Catalyst Adult Baseball Bat (Model No. CB81C)

If your bats are on the list of approved bats, by all means, have the coach show the ump the list and point out that these bats are approved. He should do it with respect and quietly as to not show up the ump in front of every one. There will probably be some confusion about this issue this year. Especially at the lower levels.
We played our first HS game last night. Both teams had all their bats and all their helmets laid out in front of the dugout prior to the game. The umps went through every single bat and every single helmet to make sure they were legal. I do believe they do this at every HS game all year long. I don't really remember years past, but I'm pretty sure they have always done it. I will keep an eye on our next games to see if it continues to happen. Incidentally, I don't think they disallowed any of the bats or helmets. If they did, no one made a big deal out of it. |

| Actually BBCOR isn't mandatory per NFHS until 2012 season. It is mandatory for NCAA this season. As to the composite ban, NFHS has a posted list on their website of BESR composite bats that are exceptions to the current ban, but like you saw, you will get some umpires who have the list and know and others who don't and you will be at the mercy of the umpires knowledge. Best that the coaches be well versed on the rule. We saw this week that an opposing coach protested a bat used following a hit that knocked in a run. After the umpires inspected the bat, it was ruled legal (correct ruling). An example of a coach not knowingnthe rule well. |
