I have a couple question about Ump's. And let me say up front I am not calling any umpire out or discrediting any Umpires.
Where do the Umpires for all these tournaments come from? Are they local, park umps that are recruited for that area?
Is there a "Umpire Club" that TD's can call and get umps to come out to their tournaments to work?
What is the normal pay for an Ump? Is it by game, tournament, per hour?
How can a person, or who does a person contact to become an Umpire to start working tournaments? Is there an experience level or a game minimum they must have worked to become a "tournament Umpire"?
My college roommate referee's college soccer and there is a local Admin for the area he works in and that Admin schedules his games so I was wondering if the process is similar. |

There are a number of umpire associations in the area. Each park contracts with an organization for umpires. You can go to any of their websites and get the answers to your questions. Try googling National Umpires Association, NUA. It is a local association that handles alot of the games in the area, has done Perfect Game also. |

I started out by getting in touch with the umpire co-ordinator for the county park and rec league. After a few years of doing little league, he came to me and asked if I would be interested in doing USSSA tourneys. He just happened to be the booking agent for one of the tourney directors. He only lets his "trusted" umps call tourney games. Classroom and field training was needed. As far as pay, it depends on the age group and organization. It is usually a set amount per game($40-$50). I dont do it for the money, I just love doing it, and getting a little extra cash is just icing on the cake. You either hate it or love it. |

Go to any ball field that has games going on and ask a umpire who to contact to start calling games. The pay is different for each level of ball and age group. I am pretty sure though even T-Ball/Coach pitch starts at 25.00 per game. Some associations will require you to join which does include a "fee" to join, a mandatory camp fee and classroom instruction. Some associations however will just be happy to have someone out there who has knowledge of the game and it dosen't cost anything to join. There is also MSBL which is adult ball who is always looking for qulified guys to work. There are also all different age groups but the pay is the same across the board for working in this league. I do agree with Christheump, one either loves it or hates it and usually is determined by the first pitch you see crossing plate! |
