Sorry for posting this twice but the first one is in 14U and I thought it might get seen more in this category.
My son has played at ECB for 2 seasons now but hasn't ever attended the tryouts until this weekend so I'm wondering how the team offers usually work. I've already been contacted by one team so my question is how long after tryouts should I be expecting offers to come in because my son was being talked to by several coaches including the Titans and since it's only Monday I certainly don't want to commit to anything until we know what's out there.

I think most people need to have a list of preferred teams, so in other word you develop a list from maybe 1-4 with the teams your son would like to play for. If choice #1 offers and you have a good discussion then go for it, if they don't then you go down your list and go from there.
As far as offers, they can offer you that Sunday so I wouldn't wait too long to decide. By Wed you should know who is interested or not. |

I was told on this board last year that if you weren't locked up by an elite team by mid-July your son must not be a highly desired "blue-chipper".
Maybe piano lessons....
Seriously, I think madskills has it right. Look at what the options are and based on all of your criteria go with the best one that made him an offer. Unless you're not satisfied with that one. Then wait. There is always movement in the Fall.
2011 recruiting has been going on for awhile. In fact, one ECB coach recruited one of our players after the teams shook hands at the end of a game in May. |

| Thanks for the input. We were in the morning group and it was a long day so I wasn't expecting anything to start up until today anyway. Wed. sounds like a good measuring stick for hearing from a team and you can bet we definitely have a list of teams we're interested in. |

We were in a unique situation as my son has never been to the tryouts and played up both in 13U and last season in 14U. Basically, no one would have ever seen him from his age group so that's why I'm asking.
As for the wrapped up by July thing, that's BS I watched the Astros gather at least 6 from the morning tryouts and announce they were going to be inviting them to work with the team for further evaluation. |

| Based on a number of postings by various 14U teams, it seemed as if most ECB teams already had the majority of their rosters set prior to the tryouts and were just looking to add 3 or 4 more players. This would imply that most of the players at the tryouts had already committed to various ECB teams. If this is truly the case, can a team like the Astros or Titans, "invalidate" the player's committment with another ECB team, if they really want that player after seeing him at the tryouts? This, of course, assumes that the player wants to play for one of those top teams. Just curious as to how the system works in this regard. |

| Dmb350, if your son has played on an East Cobb team the past two years and never officially tried out, then you should know how the system works. Folks make a valid point that the majority of positions are locked up in advance, unless you dazzle at tryouts, stand a foot taller than most kids your age or are a stud pitcher. |

If you read one of my earlier replies you would have seen that he played up 2 seasons and we got on the ECB team by a private tryout mid-season and just carried over for the second season. So, no we don't know how the team offers work after tryouts. That's why I'm asking.
Besides, we already had 2 offers I'm just trying to see what the average time is before the offers stop. |

| Honestly, it feels just like that sometimes and I hate it but the higher level travel ball community dictates you build a baseball résumé and have it ready to present when asked. Plus, my son does have an opinion as to where he wants to play and at what level so as a parent I will try my best to accommodate that within reason. It is nuts, but it's the way it works with all the talent out there. |

I've said several times on this board that travel ball is treated like a business rather than a game. Too bad for the kids 13 and up, but that's the way it is in this hyper-competitive baseball landscape. Kind of sad for 12 and under where it really still should be a game.
