All right how bout some predictions. Is everyone just playing for 2nd behind the Astros or are they missing several due to highschool playoffs and can be caught this weekend. I know 1 pitcher that is starting tonight in the 7aaa playoffs that plays for the Astros. Our club is excited to play in a tournament with so many quality teams. I just hope we can be competitive. We are with Titans Baseball out of Cumming.

Actually that's not true. My son's team finished 28th in Cooperstown and I would wager remembers it every bit as well and fondly as the 27 teams that finished in front of them.

If we had that "just win, baby" attitude, these would have been a miserable 5 years.

All-Star, I don't mean this to sound like it's going to be read, but you're making my point for me... Nobody,(other than your team) cares that you guys finished 28th any more than anyone cares my son's team made it to the Semi-finals.

My original post was trying to hit on the point that where we play who in pool play can't always be some big conspiracy theory about trying to protect this team or that team. Show up, play who they put in front of you and either win or lose, but don't build in excuses up front in case you happen to lose. Nobody cares about excuses as no one cares who came in what place other than 1st.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out, barring the extremely unexpected, we're probably all playing for second this weekend, and hopefully we'll all have a freaking blast doing it and maybe someone will step up with no excuses and a "we have nothing to lose" attitude and slay Goliath.

Good Luck!!

Hey Inga, Goliath has feelings too.

Kind of like the other day when the Astros were playing Big Stixx and one of the Longhorn players, who were grouped down by the Astros parents near the batting cages, yells "Come on Big Stixx".

Come on, REALLY? From a in-park team? I mean, I expect that stuff from teams outside the park, or if one EC team is playing another (just like I would expect people to take sides if TG Blue plays TG White) but cheering on a team outside of the family is kinda low.

I don't know whether it is good or bad that most of these boys have learned to expect everyone to be pulling against them every time they take the field (Inga you should be able to appreciate this) but some times it just makes you shake your head. I am just going to chalk it up to a player who is new to the park.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend of ball.

Perhaps an incident like that would not happen if the Astros, their parents, and coaches acted more like ambassadors of the park and treated others with a little respect and some good manners!

A-E,

It boils down to jealousy. Everybody hates a consistent winner. We saw it recently on this site with all the Bryce Harper is overrated stuff.

Funny thing is, if a Goliath, or any "hyped" player, is fotunate enough to see the "show" all the haters will be the very first ones to brag how Junior played with or against Goliath.

Good luck to your JR unless we cross paths then tell him to wear extra protection around his bottom side as one of those 50mph heaters may head that way (it's safer than a tater)...

Alter Boy,
In regards to the Longhorns cheering section.I think there are 2 reasons why the Longhorns were cheering for the Big Stixx.
1.Some people just like to cheer for the underdog.
2.There may have been some unpleasant experiences amongst the players; therefore a negative feeling towards the Astros.
After hearing the comments from the Horns,#2 is the primary reason.

If the Astros have learned; "that most of these boys have learned to expect everyone to be pulling against them every time they take the field", after 1 tournament it might be time to take a look at how they treat fellow ECB players. With that said,I think its unfair to rail this kid and his teammates for voicing an opinion.

First of all I'll start by saying that I think it's unwise for any player from an opposing team to outwardly root for any team other than his own. That will be used as motivation for the team he was rooting against in the future. And if you're from the same park, it doesn't look good.

But in defense of the player and Longhorns, I think it's very natural for a team to root against a higher seed that might get upset and make their path to the championship easier. They just need to do it on the inside or quietly, not on the outside. I know someone will say "you want to play the best competition or the championship doesn't mean as much" which is bull. Championships are championships, no matter how you earn them.

I also don't think this was a jealousy issue. I think that there is negative competition at the park fostered early in the Fall recruitment and selection process of teams over at ECB. Many mangers and parents were dogging other ECB teams, embellishing their plans, and creating an us vs them attitude. Parents are sometimes the worst relative to this issue. Do you really think the Stallions are rooting for the Longhorns, the Titans for Rawlings, the Warriors for the Phillies? Highly doubtful.

It's just competition, but kids need to keep their mouths shut.

Columnist,
I agree with that. I think there is a big difference between inwardly thinking "Man, I would really like to see that 8th seed beat the 1 seed." To some degree it is natural to root for the underdog. I have caught myself in that situation many times. However, how that is conveyed outwardly is the debate. Especially if it is a team from your own park. It would not even have been bad had the players in question been sitting on the opposing teams side and cheering for them over there. I guess it was the fact that they were doing it on the team's side by the parents and the dugout.

The fact is, the person that it rubbed the wrong way the most was not even a coach associated with the team. It was a head coach from another EC team.

Predictions are a lot more interesting than speculation about one kid's comment in favor of another team. Good grief, let it go.

So here are some predictions at 10:30am on Saturday morning:

Final four will be all East Cobb in the Gold (Stallions, Titans, Rawlings, and Phillies in an upset). Hard run in final 8 from Team Gwinnett and Milton and EC Longhorns.

Final four in Silver will be GA Jackets, Kennesaw Mustangs, Big Stixx, and EC Shamrocks.

WOW!!! I DISAGREE WITH SAYING THAT THE PLAYERS NEED TO KEEP THEIR MOUTHS SHUT!!! IF ANYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TALK IT IS THE PLAYERS. AS FOR AS E.C. TEAMS ROOTING FOR EACH OTHER ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. THE GUYS JUMPING ON THE ON LONGHORNS PLAYER ARE THE SAME GUYS THAT THROW OTHER E.C. TEAMS UNDER THE BUS ON THIS SITE EVERY CHANCE THEY GET.

Guys, the kid had an opinion and voiced it out loud. Should it have been voiced out loud, maybe not, but he is entitled to an opinion!

I honestly believe, and know for a fact after discussing this with players, that they cheered for Big Stix as underdogs. It was nothing personal. Most of these boys playing for the multitude of East Cobb teams have played together and against each other for years. They like each other. They talk to each other during and between games in a civil manner. They sit with each other between their games, and watch other teams play. They banter back and forth. They are friendly. If the coach from the other East Cobb team (not an Astro), would have listened to the boys' innocent 14 year old conversation, he would have heard them discussing the "men" of the Astros versus the "boys" of Big Stix. They talked about how the Astros pull from other states, while most of the teams pull from thier local area. They were stating the obvious. It's human nature to pull for the underdog, whether you are from the same park or not. While their cheering against the Astros may be frowned upon, their cheering did NOT warrant the rant they received from the non-Astro coach who preceded to taunt them asking if the reason they were cheering was that they were envious because they were not good enough to be an Astro. Do you tell your players the same thing? FYI Not every player asked to tryout for the Astros wants to be an Astro. The great thing about being 14 is that they laughed it off, made jokes about the incident, told their parents and coaches about it, and everyone enjoyed the rest of the tournament. Maybe if more of the East Cobb parents and coaches could be like the players i.e. friendly to each other,stress-free, enjoying the game of baseball, East Cobb wouldn't have the reputation as East Snob.
By the way, Non-Astro coach, we'll be watching you to make sure you practice what you preach, and cheer for ONLY East Cobb teams :)

Well, you missed a few and some will be out just based on bracket match-ups on Sunday. Looks like you could be a weatherman though.

Interesting points about this tournament:

After the second round, 2 of the three between the 14U Astros, EC Stallions, and 13U Astros will be eliminated.

*From pool G, 2 of the 3 teams, which many on here said was the hardest pool, ended up in the silver bracket. I think that will mess up the silver bracket. Those are two teams you really did not want in that bracket.

Yep, after all the previous tourney complaining of weak/easy early games for the teams that usually go deep on Sundays we now have some of the big boys knocking each other off early in bracket play.

This is going to turn out to be an interesting Sunday for both Gold and Silver. Personally, I like to see these big tourneys get mixed up every now and then.

The potential 14U Astros vs the 13U Astros is certainly not something one would expect to see often. Should be fun to watch.

dbm350,
The Stallions did a good job and took care of business and avoided allowing the 14U Astros vs 13U Astros matchup.

Maybe some other time.

BTW, after the second round, EC Longhorns, EC Astros 14U, EC Stallions, EC Rawlings, Kennesaw Mustangs, and EC Phillies were gone.

I am thinking the EC Titans and EC Astros 13U in the Championship, but the Milton Eagles and TG Blue may have something to say about that.

Astros 13u and EC Titans in the champs, the titans will probably win, but the EC Rawlings blew their chance. They should have beat the Miner league titans, but they didnt play like they should. I know a lot of kids on the team and ive seen them play, and i know they have a lot of potential and should be one of the top teams in the state.

Wow, this tournament had some great baseball and amazing upsets. It was nice to see something a little different than the usual. The Titans are certainly for real, as are the 13U Astros but the Stallions made everyone stand around with their mouths open. No one, not even the Stallions players my son talked too after the game could believe they pulled off a win on the 14U Astros.

This whole weekend just goes to show that in baseball, anyone can be beat on any day regardless of who they are.

We saw some great baseball this weekend, especially on Sunday. Didn't get to see the 13 YO Astros, but the Titans, 14 YO Astros and Stallions are all solid and approach the game the right way.

Just curious though, because we always talk about how travel is preparing the players for the next level. When will they ever be asked to play 4 games in a day? I can't imagine that a fresh Titans vs a fresh 13 YO Astros would end up 13-12. Probably more like 3-2 or 4-3.

It might have been exciting, but was it quality baseball?
