When the dust settled and it was time for the championship lights to be turned on it came down to the 2 biggest heavyweight teams in Georgia to once again square off. It had been over 2 years since what many considered to be the best baseball game played in this age division was played. Tonight over 2 years later that game was topped by another one featuring the same two teams.
I can't describe it any other way than to say that I saw a heavyweight prize fight with the top 2 ranked teams in Georgia standing eye to eye, toe to toe and nose to nose throwing everything at each other that could be mustered to throw. The anticipation that the fans had for this game was finally overshadowed only by the game itself.
I would love to say that one of the teams blinked but their was no blinking this night. There was no time to blink, There was only time to trade punches and trade punches they did. Back and forth, Back and forth they went with Sandtown saying "Take This" and the Bandits responding with No You Take This. Ali and Frazier didn't have any more suspense than this prize fight did.
Great pitching, Great defense, Great Everything was seen by the fans that ringed the field and even though the Bandits was ahead at the end the true winner was Georgia Baseball as both of these teams make me proud to be a part of this game.
Papa would like to congratulate Sandtown and the Bandits for doing just what Georgia baseball fans hoped they would and that was to play a hard fought no holds barred game of baseball that both teams could walk away from with their heads held high. Baseball does not get any better than this night. There was no loser this night and both of these teams deserve an equal amount of credit for playing their hearts out and I can promise you that nothing was left on the field because both teams gave everything they had in themselves to give. That is all that any of us can expect from these kids.

Tony,
You and your kids are one class act and in my opinion you have some of the best athletes ever assembled in this age group. This dance put Papa in the the hospital but as you know I escaped long enough to make the finals. What a game and you know as well as I that it was a game that could have went either way and we feel very fortunate to have come up with a win in this one.
I will tell you what I told the Doctor when she said that I couldn't leave until I had a stress test. This was happening when the Bandits were down 6-5 in the last inning to the Venom. I told the Doctor that there was no disrespect intended but that my Bandits were losing 6-5 in the top of the 6th and if I could pass this stress test she just needed to let me go. She relented and released me but if she hadn't you would have gotten the treat of seeing ole Papa in the hospital gown with his rear hanging out cheering on his Bandits against what I will always consider one of the tougest opponents we have ever faced. |
