One thing to factor in here is the fact that many of these dominent 14U teams will start playing in 15U tournaments once those tournaments get in full gear. Now that everyone is on the 60/90 fields for good, strong teams can and will play up. If you look at the web sites of the teams we're discussing, or the Teams Coming for Triple Crown 15U events, you will see that to be true. Their coaches will be challenging them against better competition and they will probably be playing in the Silver Divisions soon.
This has been a strange year with the Middle School/High School issue coming into effect. The real season begins in May for 15U's, and in many cases, for the strong 14U's. There has been no where for the strong 14U teams to go other than the Triple Crown tournaments. Thus, I think that in mid to late May you will start seeing more competitive tournaments from top to bottom. |

6's, I used to see tournaments have 1 play-in game, then start double elimination, which got everyone that 3rd game.
All in all, I don't have a big hang-up about pool games, as long as they don't turn into pseudo elimiation games (i.e. Gold/silver, Gold/Silver/Bronze, only top X move on to elimination bracket like BITS used to do, etc.). If they are just for seeding purpose, then play them however you want, against whoever. Truth is, you can be 0-3 in pool game and get the 21's seed and get matched up against the 1st seed, but if you win that first game, you take the #1 seed's route. You could decide to throw your bottom 5 pitchers in the 3 pool games, to get the experience and innings when elimination is not on the line, and save your top 3 or 4 to use in elimination games. At least you would be less likely to take pitching home with you if you could get deeper into the tournament. I would rather be trying to piece together pitching in a championship game. |
