Starting to see a trend towards more feeder teams being overseen/directed by HS coaches for system training/fundraising purposes - like the High School feeder football programs.

Cuurently travel ball still dominates the major division because it recruits from a larger area, but I see the potential for this to reverse if the high school coaches decide to exercise more control. The best example last spring was Milton where the High Schol coach said to play on the feeders if you expected to play at the high school as a freshman. They ended up with a very good major level team and a solid AAA team as well.

Curious as to whether others will follow this path outside of North Fulton/ Forsyth/ Cherokee.

I think the three factors that will drive this will be:

1) How much is the head coach willing to be involved (allow the feeder team use of facilities, give clinics in the off-season, train the coaches on his style of coaching, etc)

2) What level of coaches are picked to run the feeder team.

3) How much the HS coach holds to the "if you plan on playing on the Freshman team, you have to play on the feeder team."

If they can get the money to go toward the school they will do whatever it takes. Fundraising is king and if you can raise funds the coach will put you on the team. The summer ball will be one big fundraiser

Teddy is correct, It is all about money.

I see this continually on the football side; HS coaches touting their middle school programs, convincing parents they need to get to their program in order to be "recognized" only to have minimal involvement in the total package. The money goes to the HS Booster Club and the more kids in the middle school program the more that filters up.

I would take my chances if I thought my son was good enough to play; I would never be swayed by play for me or else. I don't care what a coach says; if a kids shows up on his field wearing a Martian suit and he can flat out play he will do just that despite where he may or may not have played.

the one thing no one wants to mention is coaches getting paid from all the fundraising the kids do for them. You could get pimp slapped

of course it doesnt stop at sports, schools don't have pta's they have academic booster clubs. You might as well call all schools private as there in no free public schools or sports anymore

Just heard that our travel team will be effected by this feeder team concept . The HS coach has told the Middle School coach to let his 8th grade players know that after middle School season plan to play in several tournaments that he is commiting the HS Varsity the JV and Middle School teams to play against other schools that are doing the same.It looks like that would lead us into late May early June. 5 players of 11 gone if they choose to play Feeder Ball for the School.

Welcome back INGASVEN...The question I have, and I don't think anyone has asked is: You only play 100 total games in a four year varsity career, if your school does well, what is it that high school ball can do for you that travel ball can not? I would also argue that the travel ball coaches in general are better coaches and have more contacts, especially when you're on a major level team in a top level travel program. What do you guys think?

I agree with titan from the point of what are you playing for? You will play much more ball in a travel career than high school. Is the goal to play college or just to enjoy your teen years? Everyone harps on player development which is not to be minimized but what are we developing them for? I would say to be the best they can be or that they want to be..which are seperate issues

For six + years I made the statement / heard the statement made by many dads/coaches that we were doing the things we do in travel basesball to get out kids ready for high school ball. Truth is the best baseball most of these kids will ever see is the ball they play with their travel teams. Feeder teams are generally a joke. They are a feable attempt by high school coaches cash in on the money they think is otherwise available to summer teams. The growing trend in the area is for high school coaches to try to mandate that kids as young as 13/14 years old "donate" their June to Feeder Team baseball....and the only positive is the money that it feeds into the high school program...High School coaches are on a trend to mess up the best farm system they could possibly have....As a general rule, the high schools with the better teams are ususlly those teams that have several travel ball kids.

Now that the HS tryouts are over, how well did playing on the HS Feeder team work out for those players that did so?

The reality is, at tryouts, players will all be mixed and the coaches only really pay attention to whether a player can compete or not. Not whether they played with the feeder team or not.
