- HS Express dropped due to player conflicts - ECB Stars dropped because of no field practice due to rain. Team policy
Schedules should be posted Tues or Wed
Well that is disappointing. I doubt many teams have been able to have field practices. Should still be a good early season tournament. |

Oh, guys, I wouldn't worry too much about Duluth this weekend. Half our team is new to us, and we haven't even seen real grass since November, so I'm expecting a good bit of rust. I will say that, like last year, we have great kids and families. That goes a long way. |

Are the pools and brackets out yet. What is the line that the weather will allow us to play this week. Papa wants to play and unless we get some kind of good weather during the week this will be the first tournament that we have played without one practice on the outside field. |

Is there not a web-site for this tournament. Papa can't find one but I can't even remember where I put my walker. Help me out guys. Surely if you plan on giving a tournament you have set up a web site for the seniors to they can keep up with their grandchildren. Don't worry about Papa, If I have to carjack the senior bus I will be there. |

Does USTBA help with this or make you do it all on your own? |

Tournament pool play is out for 11u and can be found at www.spwildcats.com. Schedules for the other ages will be updated later today and I'll provide the link when it's available.
For those obsessive coaches/parents/fans (bmoser), we are going to broadcast these games LIVE on the internet via iScoreCast. A link to the broadcasts can also be found at www.spwildcats.com.
Thanks to all for your interest. We are looking forward to some of the best weather of the year to kick off the 2010 season. See you at the park.

This is a Sandy Plains run tournament, sanctioned by USTBA. Since this is the first USTBA tournament of the year, we (SP) make the brackets and they are approved by USTBA. Of course, the teams time requirements (and there were many this year) really dictate much of this.
There are other USTBA tournaments that have played at our park (Fall State) where USTBA determines the pools. |

For now, this team has an eclectic mix of talent. I'm eager to see how it all gells.

There you go with the big words again Mr. Moser. You know that Papa is a man of limited wisdom. What does that word ecletic mean. Sounds like they got shocked. |

Thankfully, I think we have finally solidified the roster over the past week or two. Nothing like waiting til the last minute. Our big guy will be hit or miss, but the rest of the team is now set, from what I hear. And I would definitely agree that we are an eclectic group. |

You , Coach Mark, must be living right. What a beautiful weekend for a baseball tournament. Not in the tornament, but got to go watch a few games today. Got to meet Papa. Good weather, good baseball, fields in good condition, and good people, what more could you ask for? |

ELITE DIVISION Seed 1 - 643 Jags Seed 2 - Oregon Park Storm Seed 3 - Duluth Wildcats Seed 4 - Ga Jackets (Gold)
select division Seed 5 - HP Chili Dogs - Lawson Seed 6 - Oregon Park Sharks Seed 7 - Ga Jackets -(White) Seed 8 - Kennesaw Outlaws

Sucks HP had to play Jags in pool. They should have been a top 4, with only 8 teams I think one bracket would have been better but I have no complaints about how the tournament has been run or udated, great job Coach Mike. |

Papa has always liked the way the USTBA folks run their tournaments but this elite, select or gold, silver, bronze stuff is for the birds and needs to stop immediately. Bandits got caught in the same 12U trap that the 11U Chili Dogs got themselves in. The team we beat head to head winds up in the gold and we wind up in the silver. We begged to be allowed to play gold but didn't earn the right. We lost the first game in the bottom of the last inning on a walk off home run. Won the next 2 games handily but still wind up winning the silver medal. Me and the Banidts agree that winning the silver is just not what we came to try and do and I even say that the silver medal is just like kissing your sister and I got just about as much a thrill winning the silver as I would kissing my sister. This format is for trophy hunting and trophy hunting only in Papa's book. The Bandits and any other elite team in any age group do not play for the trophy as most have hundreds of trophies collecting dust. We play for the opportunity to play the best and give our all to win the tournament and I further say not to win the second tier of the tournament. I don't even think we could have won but would much rather go down fighting in the gold than raising our hands in the victory of the silver.
If teams want the opportunity to win the silver medal then they should be given the oppourtunity to play in the division that they feel best suited to play up front. I believe that all of the 12U teams in this tournament would have much preferred being placed in one championship bracket and let the games begin and may the best team win. Again we asked for this opportunity and the request was denied.
I respect the rules and admit that the Bandits did not qualify for the gold but I still don't understand how a team that we beat handily ends up in the gold and we didn't. In the past head to head came into play prior to the runs allowed or runs scored unless there was a 3 way tie.
I was so proud of my Bandits and they played some great baseball against some of the very best teams that we have ever faced. They were bigger than we normally see, they were faster, they could throw harder and had great fundamental coaching but we held our ground and played the best we could. I did see the 12U Astros and don't begin to see how we might climb that mountain as they were awesome and I don't even know they won but I expected that they would.
Again, Please don't take this as a insult to USTBA as they are great people and the frustration is not aimed at them as we knew the rules going in and again we just didn't get the whole job done this time. I don't think we could have played much better first time out and really believe that we would gave a good account of ourselves in the gold, elite, or whatever the heck they call it.

Papa - First off, thank you for coming to our tournament this weekend. I wish I would have been able to see the Bandits play but unfortunately I was too busy with the 11u games I only got to see a glimpse. I was definitely pulling for you guys to represent the 11's well.
Regarding the request your mentioned, I'm not sure that Coach Troy made that specific request as much as he was looking for clarification of USTBA rules (he could have asked without me knowing), because I think he would know that such a request would never be honored by any organization with integrity. You just can't change the rules mid-stream. We all would have liked to see a Bandits/Astros game but it wasn't meant to be this weekend.
And for clarification, head-to-head DOES come into play as the first tie-breaker if all of the teams have played each other. In this case, there were 3 teams after pool play with 1-1 records (Bandits, Webb Bridge, Hobgood). Since there were 3 and they didn't all play each other, head-to-head was thrown out.
Overall USTBA is an organization aimed at providing a great tournament experience by putting the kids first. This is why the have the multiple brackets, multiple championships, HR trophies, etc. While you are sometimes playing for silver, most kids love playing for any championship and like walking away with a trophy with the ceremony, pictures, etc. I wish you could have seen the 11u 'silver' trophy ceremony and how the kids attacked their coaches on the field to touch the big trophy. This is what USTBA is all about. Winning the silver doesn't provide the ego boost for the parents & coaches, but it does give most kids what they are looking for.
I hope everyone that came out this weekend enjoyed the great weather. We must have been living right as PeanutSr said. We work hard to provide a great tournament experience put on by all volunteers. It's at lot of hard work but I know that we all had fun. Thank you to all the coaches, players, parents & fans that came out to our park this weekend. We enjoyed hosting you.

Good post Papa - the idea behind it makes sense but sometimes the numbers or strength of teams and pool draws don't always allow for the proper execution. Certainly when there are a smaller number of teams like was the case this past weekend with the 12U (even the 11U for that matter) it would make sense just to do one elimination bracket. I was a bit surprised to see that only 3 teams were in the silver or select bracket and you all had a bye to the title game for that - why not just group all of the teams in one bracket and have at it. |

this is an easy one don't play tourneys that have split brackets. |
