Congrats to the Acworth team. Papa loves to see any team willing to put in on the line in order to get better. To get better they did just exactly what they needed to do and evidently did it with class. Papa has said many times that the loss although painful can teach as much or more than the win. |

This statement is very true. This format gives AA teams a chance to compete against some good teams to see where you stand. Gives you a measuring stick for the next event to see how you are progressing. I think everybody had a great time at the tournament and the weather was really tough to beat last weekend. |

As competitive as we all seem to be in Georgia it is always hard to play just to be playing. But BreamKing is right in noticing that we will never know where we stand until we have stood in the fire. And after you have been in the fire you should know how to put the dang thang out next time you get into it. |

The USTBA Fall State was a well run and fun tournament for the kids. The weather couldn't have been better! Indeed the most compelling games were the ones between the Titans-Scorpions and Georgia Jackets-Scorpions.
On the game with the Jackets and ECB Scorpions you can call it gamesmanship, "bush league", or whatever. It’s nothing new. I've known coach Steve for a long time and have a lot of respect for him. That's not really his style and he can't control everyone. Those maneuvers like the intentional strike out have been used by coaches and teams for years. I've seen much worse. It's just a shame that our games are ruled by the clock but that's a fact of life in tournament play. (Jackets lost one pool play game trying as fast as they could to get the home team out in the bottom half of the inning. Struck out the first two and then time expired. To their credit the Kennesaw Outlaws did not stall and played it straight.) Perhaps semi-final as well as final games should not have time limits. Tournaments can consider 4 inning pool play games with no time limit. (How many times do pool play games ever go 6 innings?)
The Jackets decided to take the high road and let the game be decided by the kids - not the coaches, parents, whistles, or the clock. This is the kind of integrity that is embedded in their team philosophy. It won't win them every game but it will prepare them for the tougher choices in life down the road.
The Jackets had to play the "play in" game vs SP Wildcats at 11 followed immediately by the battle with ECB Scorpions at 1. They ran outta gas a little vs Titans that evening committing some costly errors that prevented the game from remaining close. The Titans avenged a tough loss to the Jackets from the TC fall state a few weeks back. Titans almost had a walk off win in that game but the HR ball was just foul and the Jackets held on for the victory propelling them on where they defeated the ECB Jaguars but lost to the Bandits in the final four.
The tournament was well run and the kids were all excited about the coming spring. I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of great games among these teams next year. Fall baseball is a bit of an enigma with so many kids playing football, etc many of the teams have to get rental players in order to field a team. I saw PrimeTime-Chili Dogs in the TC tournament. The Jackets were using their combined rosters from their gold and white teams. Many of their veteran players have not played this fall.
Again, fantastic job by USTBA and host Sandy Plains! |

I just wanted to thank Coach Chris and all the Outlaws for letting Grace play on Saturday. We had a great time and everyone treated us great. We are proud you guys came out of pool play as the second seed. We look forward to seeing you guys again. |

I have not witnesed such a dramatic momentum change in a game in many many years.
If you are referring to the homerun hit by the Titans against the GA Jackets at ECB in the triple crown, I promise you and I don't want to sound like a spoiler, but I was sitting in the outfield got up and stood right behind the foul pole and that ball was a foot foul. I wasn't watching the umpire so I didn't see him signal the homerun but I could have sworn it was foul. I was close enough to see the first baseman for the Titan's dad twist his ankle going after the ball, I didn't ask him what he thought but he may have seen it differently. Titans had that game won, but a baserunning error on a perfectly executed squeeze, should have won it for the Titans. That game showed me that both the Titans and Jackets are very good top major teams.

I also saw this play and don't know if it was foul or not, but I do know the Titans 3B coach agreed with the call and he had as good of view as anyone, except maybe toprank. The same kid then smoked the ball on the next pitch, but right at the Jackets player who then doubled off the runner at 2B. It was the biggest 2 pitch momentum change I've ever seen.
toprank is correct about the base-running error on the squeeze play. This happened an inning earlier and would have ended the game. Easy mistake to make in the Fall.
Both of these are great teams. |
