Recieved word that there is a trend in the 12 year old age group of parents using coaches for the trip to CDP and then jetting off to another team in the 13u age group. How prevalent is this? Not naive enough to think it does not happen but is it a parental epidemic?

My 15YO went to Cooperstown when he was 12U and we did not experience any more team swapping at 13U than in previous years.

The Cooperstown Dreams Park experience is something not to miss. I can understand that parents who are familiar with the experince would want to seek to play for a team the is going. But don't feel that they would later leave that team for any reason different than the normal swapping and need to finding a team with a chemistry that currently matches their son's current talents.

The only way that your statement makes sense is if the kid then jumped to a team that didn't go to CDP. Not sure if that new coach would be worth playing for if he doesn't have the organizational skills to take a team to the ultimate experience!

Be very careful who you are "Receiving Word" from.... Sound like a little poppycock to me!

Looking forward to reliving the experience with my younger son!

Not sure that I understand the question here. Is a commitment to a team a lifetime thing now days? I am not a proponent of team jumping, but the commitment to a team should be for that year. That commitment is from the players, parents and coaches. Any number of things could occur to not make a player or parent want to return to that team the following year. In most cases the players parents are footing the bill for Cooperstown either from their own pocket or through fund raising efforts. I am not sure how that is using the coach.

Am I missing your question here? This could turn into an interesting discussion. It is a fair topic that I will be interested in hearing other viewpoints.

301-

I think I did not frame it correctly. You are correct that this could be a nice topic. On another topic a poster named nfbm better summed it up than I:

I think that alot of families will join a team at 10u/11u with Cooperstown as a goal. There is a big question at 12u tryouts for many families that needs to be answered; is the team planning to go to CTown and do they have a certificate. Just look at the postings of 12u teams hosting tryouts, most will advertise that they are going to CTown.

So with that, alot of families are looking to ensure that their child is on a 12u team that is going to CTown. So for those families, they are limiting their options to those teams. As I mentioned above, many of those selections happen at 11u and 10u when landing on teams.

Once that 12u season ends, and CTown is no longer goal 1, that limitation goes away and families may feel that their options are greater, thus "jumping" to a different team.

13u is also a key age where players begin to get "serious" about preparing for high school. Families will then look for coaches who can help in that development. This may not be the same coach that has coached a core of friends through 12u.

I think that every family needs to have their list of priorities for their player listed before selecting a team every year. If going to CTown is priority 1 for the 12u season and that drives their selection (with that selection occurring as many as 2-3 years earlier for that 12u season), then there is nothing wrong with that. With that not being priority 1 in the 13u selection list, then their selection may be different.

I don't see that as "using" a team or "jumping" by any means. Just finding the best fit for your child and family. What dictates a best fit can change from year to year.
