We had a crazy situation in a pool game last night. We were visitors and were leading 9-5 going into the bottom of the last inning when a batter was called out on a pitch that hit the dirt. The batter jogged to first but was not tagged or thrown out by our catcher. The field umpire told the kid he was out and sent him to the dugout. The opposing coach objected to the call saying the runner had a right to the base but the umpire said he was out and the player stayed on the bench. Another pitch was thrown and then the field umpire called the home plate umpire over and explained that he made a mistake and the player actually should have been on first. They called me over, explained their position, put the runner back on first and erased the count. I objected to the call and asked the TD for a ruling. The TD upheld the umps decision stating that it was a "correctable call". I started to protest but didn't have $100 on me and thought. What's the point?
My question is what would have been the real benefit of protesting? The other team ended up scoring 3 runs and we won. It may have hurt our seeding but no one knows what the outcome would have been as it was not the final out. |

I agree that it shouldn't be changed after another pitch was thrown but no way I would even protest when the runner was clearly supposed to be at first base anyway (plus it is pool play). |

No point, you are really hung up on wins and losses too much. ITS 12U baseball!! Was it the world series on TV? NO, let it go. Sorry I hate it when coaches freak out on calls made by guys making $18/hour to umpire. Good example.
Last year we had won a game when then umpire called it because of time (bracket play). The other coach cried for 30 minutes to the umpires that we had 1 more minute to play...They came back from the car and forced us to play another inning. We lost the game and my parents and players were all upset. I said this to them "You had the stinking lead. Go out there and do you job and you wouldn't have lost. It was totally within your control and you let a bad call get in your way of winning a game!" FYI, the owner of the umpires association called me to apologize the next day. |

peashooter-why would the the head of umpiring association call you and apologize. 1 minute is 1 minute. You lost. The game is played within the time given. If there was a minute left then why would he have called? Curious to what he said...Sorry coach about last night, all the umpires and tournament director agree that there was a minute left? So sorry we played that extra inning and you lost. Don't by it. The reason coaches freak out is because it cost money to play these tournaments and umpires shouldn't determine the final score of the game. The hard working young men from whatever team they play for deserve better. 1 minute is just as important as soccer, basketball, football, hockey, and so on. |

Shooter: Here I go getting drawn into another discussion! Similar thing last year at a tournament we stayed to watch as well. However, this was a pure lack of knowledge by the umpires in a championship game.
Team A led team B by a huge margin after just a couple of innings, but team B chipped away inning by inning. The rules for the championship game say that a certain amount of time should be added (20 minutes I believe in this case). I personally disagree with a time limit on a championship game (or any game where there isn't someone waiting on the field or it's after 11 pm on a school night, but that's beside the point).
Anyway, team B chipped away and eventually tied the game, but then team A (home team) got another little bit of a lead. The HP umpire called time at the end of that inning. Players had lined up, walked through, high fives etc. However, a PARENT from the visiting team scoped out the TD (easy to spot sitting in a golf cart loaded with trophys) and had a 5 minute discussion with him calmly pointing out the remaining 20 minutes that should have been added to the game (not crying for 30 minutes). After some discussion, all players were made to return to the field where team B went on a tear and ended up scoring like 10 runs or something and then held on for the win!
Rules are rules. The parents of team A may have been upset about the loss, but rules are rules. Why make them if they aren't going to be enforced? In fact, there are so many rules that vary from park to park, tournament to tournament, league to league, age group to age group, that no wonder the umpires are confused here and there. There are rules that get changed one year, and changed back the next.
I applaud that parent for knowing the rules and more so for speaking up. This person obviously believed in that team too. Not sure where the coaches for either team were in all this, but I'm not even sure they knew the rules regarding time limits were different for a championship game.
Again, rules are rules. If you are going to volunteer or accept money to coach a team, LEARN THE APPLICABLE RULES. You owe at LEAST that to those boys on your team. |
