I've read some pointed opinions lately about teams picking up players for tourneys. I like Papa's opinion...fine at the highest level of play, so long as no rules are being broken. In AAA, AA, A, I think teams should try to avoid picking up players because it undermines the whole premise for having levels of play in the first place. In the Fall, when most events are "Open", it matters not. Teams are just trying to get 9 or 10 kids to play some Fall Ball.
In either circumstance, before you offer pointed opinions about specific teams, it would be wise to find out all of the facts.
One team I saw being called out just today happens to have a player out due to a conflict with Hoops. Hoops began last November and culminates this weekend with a County Championship. He happens to be the Hoops teams' best player. He chose to stand by his teammates and play basketball. His baseball team decided to use a replacement to play in his spot for a Major caliber event this weekend. This family is honoring their commitment to 11 other hoops family's. His baseball team is also trying to do the best thing by their family's by using a replacement player. This was an unforeseen circumstance.
How do I know all of this? Because he's on my sons Hoops team! |

I agree with the concept at the higher levels. Unfortunately, this gets tried at the lower levels and somebody's mom or dad gets upset because they see it as the replacement taking away from more at bats for their own sub par player. It's a catch 22.
My son was asked to fill in last weekend as the roster is being kept to a minimum but a couple players were unavailable. He was supposed to be #10 so any injury wouldn't affect the number in the field. At my request, he was only used as an EH and batted 10th. Hopefully their was no negative feedback from the peanut gallery.
What I saw last year was a pitcher being brought in for a missing pitcher or a catcher for a catcher. Parents who had kids that did not pitch or catch complained about the replacement. I want parents to think big picture from now on.
Also seen this past fall: replacement brought in for Saturday pool play because of injuries and other player conflicts. He was the 9th player on Saturday, but was the 11th player on Sunday. The coach being the great guy that he is still batted roster on Sunday. The regular players who batted after this kid got upset. Okay maybe not the players, but their parents.
It's so hard to please every parent in every situation. Dont you wish classes were taught on how to be a good travel parent?? |

Agreed.
And good on the kid for sticking with the basketball team. Basketball playoffs should always trump early season baseball. Just like baseball should trump Spring football and football should trump Fall baseball.
If we insist on starting baseball in the middle of winter, we should expect wrestling and hoops to take precedence as they decide their champions. |

I like the idea of a having a "How to be Good Travel Ball Parent" class but can't for the life of me think of who might have the credentials to teach this class. We have all been guilty of being an example of a BAD Travel Ball Parent and Papa would be at the top of this list and there are only a few out there that could pass the background check for this type teaching slot. |

I can't count how many times I've been to tourneys and saw teams changing players day to day while our team stayed the same. At times, I felt we were schmucks for not doing the same. Looking back, I think it gave my son a stronger sense of the team concept, and I'm glad our Coaches took the high road. I also learned later on, that in some cases, the other teams adding players wasn't as bad as it looked after I learned why.
Since our 1st tourney in 6U,(my son played year round travel~420 games) I can recall only 2 times where my sons team picked up players. Both were to have enough boys to play, and both non-sanctioned events(7U Summer& 10U Fall). I'm proud of that record.
Finally, my son gets to benefit from it, so I don't feel a bit guilty. It might just save a kids arm this weekend.
Totally agree with the sports overlapping. I'm not a big fan of playing baseball in February, nor Football in August. I am running out of Seasons though, so I'm going to deal with it.
What in the heck am I gonna do when my son no longer plays sports?

That's true. We've all been a bad travel parent at some point. Most of us learned from our mistakes, but some did not. Those of us who have been there/done that can say, "hey! Don't do it this way because you will regret it some day!" |
