My son wants two piece head gear for his catchers gear. At 13 is it allowed in usssa and triple crown or do they still have to use the one piece head gear?
USSSA rules only specify full ear coverage for 4U-12U. NFHS rules require NOCSAE certified headgear, which as I understand it doesn't require full coverage like the hockey-style helmets but still requires a mask that includes ear flaps. A couple of threads at hsbaseballweb make note of umpires actually requiring full ear coverage at times (an incorrect ruling, apparently), so I think if it were me I'd just stick with hockey-style helmet to avoid potential problems (or at least always have one as backup).
My son played 13u last year and caught with 2 piece head gear. He loved it. We always had a back up ready just in case but only needed it once in a tournament because of the park rules. We played a lot of U trip and never had a problem at those tournaments.
Thanks for the info. I believe I will just get both that way he can wear what he wants and if they dont let him wear the two piece then he has a back up as well.
