This camp/tryout came up in a conversation with a player and parents that I was interviewing for an article on playing travel ball with a disability. A player from their team is attending and thier parents bragging.
Very interesting in that they are allowing kids from other countries take part.

There a few players missing from the list from GA and FL and the Southeast that I have seen play at or above the levels of many of the kids listed. Probably by choice or lack of means. Not to mention there is something to be said for playing locally with a team and learning how to win and lose with humility along with players you see more often than for a weekend at a time. Just my $0.02.
In all fairness, camp sounds like a great learning experience. The tryout will show all the players how competitive the sport they love is becoming. Good prep for High School and the big diamond.
Anybody know any details about this?

I have been trying to find out more about the camp. Is this truly an elite camp/team or just another fund raiser? In short; is it worth it to try and attend? |

My son and I will be attending the camp. No delusions of making the team, just a great way for father and son to spend a quality weekend together in Miami. One expectation of the camp is already met, very proud of son training very hard for the opportunity. The team expects the members to play locally too. They plan to cherry pick some tourneys throughout the year. |

Mdschert, that is great thanks for information bottom line is half the kids that are going to make it on this team today will be playing Lacross next year! Your son will benefit and who knows may develop into the big diamond. Have a great time. I am going to start researching thios camp and pitch my editors on it. More to come....... |

Sounds like a great weekend. Be sure to give us an update after you attend. And good luck to your son. If he makes it, you will have a busy spring :-) |

I will not Trash this group on here. I will let you make your mind up for yourself. There was a book written about Joe Keller and his rise in AAU Basketball and how he used Darius Walker The NEXT Lebron type player at 9 years old to make Money. Here is the book title... "Play Thier Hearts Out"
You need to read a lot of the reviews of this book. It will tell you all you need to know about Joe Keller and Phenom.

This is unbelievable. I completely, with sound body and mind don't get this. The kids are 12 years old! I repeat 12. Did I state they are 12. Just making sure it was clear they are TWELVE YEARS OLD. What's next, traveling around the world to play 12 year old baseball. Maybe you'll be able to play a pick up game with the Japan Little League World Series champs at their home field. Its one thing to have a group of kids from the same area play ball together during the summer then head to a big tournament at the end of the season, either out of state or across country. But to have kids from Cali, Florida, Ga. , Tennessee and other states across this great land of ours, just so you can ride in to town, put the smack down on some teams in a tournament, puff your chest out to say look who my son (or daughter - politically correct) plays for is crazy. Hell, mine still trying to figure out what that stuff is growing in his armpits and what girlfriend he's going out with . Could understand if they were 16, 17 but did I say they are 12! Come on people. JMO from a simple man. |

Those of you that know me know I always say how bizarre is the national past time of youth baseball. This youth national team is a case to my point.
However, consider these questionable actions:
Have you heard the one about the parent who pays $20k (20 thousand) for a 12u player to get a "growth" injection? I hope that its an "suburban" legend!
How about this one --- Some dads are ENCOURAGING excessive throwing in hopes that it brings on the need for Tommy John surgery as the surgery has gotten so good that some perceive the arm to be BETTER after the surgery than before!
Is there no limits?!?!?!?!? |

Each boy and family are different. This opportunity turned out great for my son. He trained everyday doing speed and agility, weight training, batting, pitching or fielding clinics. He earned the priviledge to go. I did my due diligence with coach Keller. He already has a great team in so cal. They just won a regional tourney over thanksgiving weekend. There are 5 MLB players attending this camp. I can't find a better way to spend my money than to take my son to Miami and play some baseball with some mlb players. It is a personal choice |

Look I am not going to tell you not to go. But I will tell you don't be fooled by them telling you a lot of BS about how good your son is. This is all about $$. Look up Joe Keller and Demetrius Walker. The book "Play Thier Hearts Out" tells a story about how used this 9 year old kid to make Money in AAU basketball. Now he is looking for the next Bryce Harper to Latch his hands on. |

This sounds like a great idea. You might as well compete against all the best players. |

Sadly there was a kid who played on our local HS team who's dad told several people that it was "no biggie" his son had Tommy John UCL surgery....Now 2 years out of surgery he still can't throw 80 mph and after all this rehab will have to have the procedure again.....off topic but still pretty crazy... |

I guess the better question is why did he leave basketball, or was he forced to leave because of lack of interest in joining his teams. Now he has moved on to baseball. Does he know anything about baseball? Or does that even matter? I would be interested to know if any of the real top tier kids are going to Miami. Team Florida is probably the best 12u team in the country, any of those kids going to the camp? JMO out |

I'm not sure about 12 years old, but if my son's could compete at this level I would take them. |

11Ufan unfortunately Most Dads ego's won't allow them to take a hard look at this group. They will choose to ignore it because they think they are part of a great team. It will be a hard lesson to learn at the expense of their child. I have a couple of good friends here in Calif that thier boy's are still on the shelf physically and Emotionally because of Mr. I am the Greatest!! |

mdschert, like anything there will always be two sides to every story. Do your homework and do what you feel is right for you and your child and if something at some point changes you move on and learn from it. Some will have an ax to grind and some of it may be warrented but at the end of the day it's your decision. |

Reports are that the camp was very well run. Look for a story in the upcoming weeks I will post the link. One dad did comment to me in a phone interview that they would place the camp on par with their local university camp minus the big league names. |

mdschert - sounds like you went into this with realistic expectations (i.e. enjoying the weekend with your son + competition), and glad you guys enjoyed the experience!
We've been fortunate that our son has had to oppty to compete with and against some pretty fantastic talents over the last couple years.
Know we're not supposed to mention names here, but what kids stood out amongst the talent @ the camp? Recognized many of the names on the list but would appreciate your feedback |

It looks like their roster is almost complete, interesting to see an EC Astro player on the list. Knowing how they run their program, not sure the coach would appreciate one of his player at another teams try out. Didn't see many of the stronger players from GA on that list tho so no surprise non made it.
When will we see this superteam play a tournament in the SE?? |

Take a quick look at the team roster on USSSA. Brand new team for 2012 and they have 24 total players that have listed with the team already at one time or another. This isn't a team but looks more like a colletction of players who float on teams for competition. There is one kid listed that played for Stealth Bombers but has already been listed with 6 teams after Team Phenom for 2012. I think you have to ask yourself what is your definition of a "team".
The website references that they are taking 18 players because not all players can make all tournaments. No kidding! Half of their rosters live on opposite coasts in FL or CA. We are talking about most of these kids who are in 6th grade.
My son plays on a major 12U team in Georgia and his TEAM will play over 80 games this season. We couldn't possibly handle anymore games than that. Not sure how parents can question why their gifted kids reach burn out of baseball by high school. |

Between this post and the previous post about the Central Florida Gators flying kids in to win a tournament in January, I am pretty much sick to my stomach at this point. I know I am probably an out of touch sentimentalist, but what happened to playing for the love of the game? Shameful for 6 and 7th graders to be taught the lessons they are currently being taught. Win, Win and Win! What did you win???? A trophy?? No you bought that. Forget learning how to be a team or leadership or dealing with adversity. If your not good enough, don't work harder, we will just buy you better ringers!! Sad.

If you want an idea of how this team operates, read the TBS site about the MLK tourney in SO. Cal. |
