I was just looking at the Team USA selections' USSSA roster history's. Here's what I found:
9 (64%) have always played up 1 or more age groups. Several played up 2 age groups at times.
5 (36%)have played mostly at their age group
2 have no USSSA history
The boys that tried out who played at their age groups must have been surprised to see all the great players they had never seen before. Now we know why. Those "strangers" were playing up all along.
I think only 2 came from cold weather climates.

Not necessarily on the "played up" comment. International age cutoff is Jan 1, not April 30, that means that many of the players "had" to play 13u last season because their age on May 1, 2011 was 13. Most of those kids weren't playing up, they were playing with their age group (not all, but most). Much like several kids who will be playing 13u this season but won't turn 13u After Jan 1, 2012 but before May 1, 2012 will be able to try out with next season's crop of "rising" 13u's who will be playing 12u this upcoming season.

I thought these 16 had only been chosen to be added with 24 more that would try out again in August of 2012 to try and make the 18 man squad that would be Team USA.
Which ever it is it must be some happy times for those boys and their families. What an honor it must be to wear those red, white and blue uniforms and play for the greatest Country in the World. |

In The Know: Thanks for the insight, I didn't know that. This makes it even more special for our Georgia boys to have made it. |

You are correct regarding several kids having to play 13u because of the difference between international age and domestic age for baseball. Another observation that needs to be made is that none of the 16 kids selected from the NTIS have "made" Team USA. They are the inital 16 players chosen out of a final group of 40 to be further selected at different venues. From the 40 man roster, after several intramural scrimmages, a group of 18 players will be chosen to form Team USA 14u for the 2012 season. It is likely that several of the inital 16 chosen at the NTIS will form part of the final 18. No one knows how many. |
