I always find it entertaining when posters try the "we beat A and A beat C so we're better than C" or the A beat C 2 out of 3 times last season arguments to try and place teams. This works in sports like football where the QB is the same from game to game. Baseball really only works out that way if you play multi-game series within a consecutive span. If Team A plays a best of 3 series over 2 days, then yes, the outcome is more reflective of which team is better. In that scenario you have to use multiple pitchers, and teams are likely trying to win all three games. Ditto for 5 or 7 game series. If you choose 3 games that may have been spread out over March through July, some being pool games, others being early bracket or late bracket play, the comparison isn't apples to apples.
Why do you think high school playoffs are always a best of three over two days (day one, doubleheader, day two, the "if needed" game). This usually results in the better team advancing. Then they wait a week for the next round which is another best of three.
Tournament ball is very different from playing a season, the multi-game series. The comparisons you guys make above without any context as to when the games were played, who pitched (one team's ace vs. anothers number 5?), and whether they were pool, early or late bracket, etc., really are meaningless comparisons as a means to rank teams in a vacuum. You have to apply subjective analysis in addition to results of the head to head. That is, you have to take all these things into consideration. |

Gwinnett - Rays & Shiloh were even last year 2-2. Ya missed one of the games early in the year @ Sandy Plains b4 you joined Shiloh.
Spartan4 summed it up well when he said.... I think all 6 of these teams can beat each other at any time....
Its all good - competition helps our kids to get better + improve. |

prestont, lol...my bad. We love playing all these teams and wish it could have been more!
in-the-know, you are sooooo right! These comparisons are very hard without proper analysis. Just an opinion, not microanalysis of each team. However, a wins a win. To my knowledge all these teams play to win no matter whos pitching or if its a pool game. I too find it entertaining discussing these wins and losses. Plain and simple, one team won and one lost. We could talk about it all day why one team lost or won.
ALL are great teams! And yes ANY one of them can win against the other on any given day.
Just thought I would stir it up a little bit to make sure everyone is still ALIVE out there....lol

fellas, ranking teams is kinda a like black magic in that everyone has a secret potion to come up with what they want. the one thing you can check on is that most of the top 6 teams rarely play in pool play so that means most match ups occured in bracket play. Now, does it matter when they play in bracket? It shouldn't cause it's bracket play and everyone know win or go home.
If you look back on some of the match ups, you will see that most teams went with their #1 or #2 pitchers when playing each other so that is fairly indicitive that most of the time they went with their best. is it a perfect method? no but i think its the cloest thing to use when trying to figure pecking order. Like college fb, it's all subjective and in those cases its opinion. |
