Is it a requirement that boys move to a -3 weighted bat at the age of 13, or is this more of a guideline to prepare them for high school ball? I am confused by the USSSA rule that states that players 14u and below must use a -3 size bat if it is a big barrel. I can't see very many 8 or 9 year old players swinging a drop 3.
The rule reads as follows: Beginning JANUARY 1, 2012, Big Barrel baseball bats (2#8541;” or 2¾”) will be allowed in USSSA sanctioned play for 14U and below if, and only if, (1) they have the New USSSA Mark (see below) prominently and permanently displayed on their taper and are manufactured by an approved USSSA bat licensee (a list of these USSSA approved bat licensees is found on the USSSA/Baseball website), (2) is a "Qualified BBCOR Bat" ( a Big Barrel bat that is made by a USSSA approved bat licensee, has a BBCOR mark permanently attached to the bat that is recognized by NFHS as a legal bat for NFHS sanctioned play and has no more than a minus 3 ounces difference from the length of the bat which bat must be at least 29 inches long) or (3) is a Wood Bat manufactured by an approved USSSA bat licensee .
Can someone help clarify what the different organizations will enforce (outside of the new "composite" rules)? |

Nightmare huh?
-3 has to be BBCOR. -5 and up carry the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp.
13U doesn't have to use a -3. They can use -10 and under/over - not sure how to word that. 14U has to use -5 or -3. 15U and up/high school uses -3 only.
Still hearing rumors no one will enforce anything this fall for 14U and below. We are on deck with a wood bat until... |

Bats have to be one or the other depending on the age of the CHILD.. Those 14u and up will have to swing what they swing in high school, which is a -3 and must be BBCOR. the Younger ages need to have the new USSSA stamp on it. Think that what that means.. |

BBCORE bats are the only ones that have a weight V. Length limit for 14U in 2012 (-3)
The others ( non-BBCORE ) must have the new USSSA Stamp but have to weight/length requirements.......Thats how I read it. |

The big question about the bat regs: does "2012" start Aug. 1st or Jan. 1st??
I know for age purposes it starts Aug. 1st. Just want a straight answer from some all knowing being at each of the following: USSSA, TC, Nations, GrandSlam and GSA. Any of you running independent tournaments on a regular basis feel free to chime in as well. |
