As we get closer to our Cooperstown trip (Week 5), the stress and nervousness of the entire process is starting to mount. I am posting this to ask for help/guidance from those who have been there already this year or in recent years to help guide a coach/parent through expectations of the entire weekly process.

Registration
1. How long does the registration process take?
2. What else, other than the standard Cooperstown packets and required docs, do we need to have to help in the registration process?
3. Do you recommend kids staying in barracks Friday night, or should they come in on Saturday morning?

Barracks
1. Other than fans and air fresheners, any other suggestions of must have's?
2. How are the restrooms/showers setup? How many per barracks?
3. How's the laundry service work and should we plan on multiple pairs of pants?

Any other suggestions?

The game play, comraderie, etc, is truly something we're looking forward to and prepared for. It's all of the unknowns that have kept me up at nights and am hoping for some relief from the experienced coaches/families!!

Thanks in advance for all the help.

As a mom I have a question regarding opening ceremonies. Do teams throw out candy and mardi gras beads?

We went to Cooperstown the 1st week, June 4th. During that week only 1 team threw out beads, that was the team from New Orleans (go figure). All my kids thought it was cool and wished they would have done it. So you can throw beads/candy if you choose to.

Registration process is slow unless you get it done on Friday, I had all my kids stay in the barracks on Friday night, made it easier for me to deal with them in the barracks. Plus alot of pin trading goes on that friday when the kids start getting there. Laundry service works well, drop off all uniforms/personal wash after last game and pick them up starting at 6am the next morning. We had multiple pairs of pants and it worked out better in the end for us. No barracks have there own showers, showers/bathrooms are in buildings by themselves, have your kids wear swim trunks and shower shoes into the showers. Its no better for the coaches, we had Shower Bldg F as our shower.
Make sure you know who will be participating in the skills competition as you will have to name them at the registration process. All in all it is very organized and you will move thru without any issues. We had a great week there, enjoy it and good luck!!

We were there week 1 and went to the championship so everything is kind of fresh so I will try to give you an idea.

1. Several teams try to get there Friday night. So in short with everything required for registration it will take a good 2 to 3 hours depending on lines. You will have different stations / lines for everything, birth certificates, laundry, coaches badges, uniforms and so on.

2. One issue I heard of most was your kids shot records and medical insurance cards. Make sure all your players have those and they are up to date. I remember hearing of a player whos shot records were not up to date and they didnt allow him to play.

3. Stay in the barracks Friday night. Let them get some of that energy out of their system. Plus there was a lot of pin trading on Friday night.

BARRACKS.

1. Bring in a few cases of water. Also bring some vitamin C boost drinks. We had a few kids that got sick so this might help ward something off.

2. Each barracks will be assigned a shower for the kids. Coaches have their own shower. Also the kids are required to wear bathing suits when showering.

3. Yes bring multiple pairs of pants. We also had kids bring more than one pair of socks but make sure if you do they dont have a logo on them or they wont be allowed to be worn. As for the laundry. Each night you will fill out a form and place those items in to the laundry bag that will be supplied to you. Once you have completed the laundry form you will place all items in the bag and carry it up to the food tent. The next morning around 6 am the laundry bags are color coded and you will go find yours and pick it up.

Be prepared to walk miles and miles and miles. Bring some good shoes because nothing is close and requires a lot of walking to get to. Another suggestion, dont save pitching in pool play. Based on how you finish in pool will determine your seeding after pool. If you are seeded below the 14th seed you will have to play 2 games on Weds and if you are further down in seeding we faced a team that once they got to us on weds it was their 5th game of that day. The whole idea is to win and give up the fewest runs possible.

Other than that this is a once in a life time expereince and will be something you and your kids will remember FOREVER!!!!!!!

Most don't (at least three years ago they didn't). Typically teams from Louisiana will throw beads. A few will toss candy, but very few.

I thought that the coolest thing I saw were some kids brought a bag full of foam baseballs with their team name on them and threw them out to the fans in the bleachers this past week.

There is NOT an admission charge or parking charge for spectators. You will be tempted to spend plenty of money on concessions and gift shop items though !!

Nope, completely free for all spectators. Note that no pedestrians are allowed to enter or leave the park. You must enter and leave via vehicle through the security gates. Since CDP is officially a licensed camp, players must be signed in and out if they are leaving, and this is all done through the security gate.

Our team will be going Week 6. Do most teams utilized the extra hitters in pool play and go to subs in bracket play, or are subs generally the way most go for both pool and bracket play? Any thoughts and feedback related to this is much appreciated. Thanks

Bring some sort of Lysol or air freshener. It begins to smell pretty "ripe" in the barracks. Also they provide 1 fan. It will be hot. Bring extras. The cots have a bottom sheet. Bring a top sheet and a blanket but unless it cools at night (which it didn't for us for the later 1/2 of the week) it was hot. Our boys hated the food (as did the coaches). We ended up "sneaking" them food into the barracks. If you do give them snacks make sure they hide them in the outside locker because the barracks will be checked. We had each parent donate a case of water. They'll use it. The team is allowed a "team cooler". They have ice you can purchase. You walk a lot but really the furthest fields are 13, 14, 15 and 16 (I believe). Registration takes forever because of the people you have to wait on in front of you. You drive your car to the barrack. Get out and unload then move the car. It makes it easier for others to get situated. The lane between the barracks is begin enough for just about 2 cars. The BBQ dinner on Saturday was okay. Our boys ate dinner at 4:30. We had a few late games. They were hungry after the late game so figure on them wanting a burger or piece of pizza afterwards, which they can take back to the barracks (an unexpected cost). Cooley's in CP Village is good for cold beer and bar food. There's also a pizza place just before town that is good. TJ's for breakfast. Have fun.
