A 32/29 BBCORE hitting well with it.. just haven't put it over the wall yet but getting close and will be 14 in Aug. Also been using it all year. I didn't want him to get to HS ball and have to get use to a drop 3 and a BBCORE. If anyone is wondering .. YES you will have to swing it to put it out there, no more touch the ball and it's a home run. So if there is no power in his swing teach him to bunt...

I think it is more the question of what action is now coming off the heavier bat and whom can swing a drop 3 in a long enough bat, control the longer bat, and also get plate coverage. That bat is going to be heavier by the 3rd at bat, 3rd game of the day, etc..........

There are a myriad of kids at different sizes and stages at this age. We have a few on our team that are not physically mature enough to handle a drop 3 at this point. I have found it is not a long transition, but my 13 is on the bigger side. Decision should be based on the individual, and his physical abilities.

Rippit....

We went w/the LS Omaha all black BBCORE, we have been a LS Omaha bat family for a long time and when my kids did try to switch they didn't like the wgt distribution in the other bats such as Easton w/the power cap... they didn't like that at all.

As far as a 13y/o using a drop 3 it all depends on the kid he used a drop 5 for 2 years so I knew a drop 3 would not be a problem. If they haven't hit puberty yet then I would stay w/the lighter bat..

The question is... what do you practice with?
Also I seen a kid use the Nike BBCORE bat that I believe is yellow it sounded like crap and didn't go very far.

I'm not amazed, but what I heard the other day sort of blew my mind so I thought I'd ask the question. Small 13 year olds, some of them almost 14, swinging -9 or -10. And one we know who is already 6'1" still swinging a short -9. And they are standing there in awe of a kid with a -3 like they'd never seen one before.

On another thread topic, I posed the "what now" idea of so many things changing for some of these boys at once: bigger field/longer base paths, bigger bat REQUIRED, BBCOR. There have been a lot of questions asked here about these things individually and the effects on the players, but put them all together and I really believe that there is going to be some interesting repercussions.

Maybe the drop of the bat isn't that big a deal. I don't know. I never played baseball, only slow pitch softball and used the same bat from 7th grade til I was an adult and stopped playing - and I'm sure that bat was dead after the first year! lol. I'm only reporting what I hear from my son and his counterparts.

Somebody mentioned false sense of confidence at 14 (or something like that) on another post and all I'm trying to say is maybe there has been a lot of false sense of security in some bad hits where a kid reached due to speed, but throw all those other things into the mix and the bad hit is now a solid out - speed or no speed - if that kid hasn't ever been coached to hit the ball properly.

Okay, I'm done.

Big Dawg: Thanks for the info. I'll be looking into bats in July. He used a 31-28 wood in the cages all winter then started the season using a 32-27 Demarini. He's now bouncing back and forth between a 32-29 Easton and the Demarini depending on who is pitching. Sometimes I wonder if it makes all that much difference and maybe it's just a mental thing between the 3 and 5???

I was at a 7/8 9/10 allstar tourney this week and it was amazing to me the number of kids (mostly big kids) that were using only their arms to swing with, virtually no lower body at all. Now the kids were hitting and getting some decent hits, but if you were to put a heavier bat in their hands those hits would have gone away.

So these kids will continue on using their -10's and -13's and staying with a short bat and they will get hits and be considered a 'good hitter' all through youth league and b/c they're 'big kids' and can muscle the bat, they will be sought after by teams. But when the time comes and they are handed a -5 or -3 they are going to have 2 choices, either go back to square one and re-learn how to hit properly, or drop out.

We'll be buying a new travel bat this summer and I'm seriously contemplating a -8 rather than a -10 just so the kid begins getting used to the heavier bat. My only qualm with this is that I feel it will be a detriment to his success b/c all the other kids are going to be swinging -10's. I've even considered getting a -8 just for practice and letting him swing a -10 on game day.

We've already started working a wood bat into our batting practice routine and honestly he loves hitting with it. It stings him from time to time but I keep stressing that is the bat giving you feedback that you're not hitting it in the sweet spot.

I gotta tell you all that it's good that your already thinking about this as when your playing youth ball although it is about winning it's also about the future and planning for it. I did this with my first kid and I have done it w/my 13yr old.. Use wood in the offseason and put the other stuff away... then every 2 years change the wgt and plan out what age will he have the opportunity to play HS ball and work your way to that Drop 3 and for me and my kids, I always wanted them going into that year w/atleast 1years experiance with that wgt. So he will have the opportunity to play Jv ball next year so this year it was a BBCORE -3. The past 2 years it's been a -5 and before that for 2 years a drop 8 so on and so forth but the whole time we have had old trusty wood in the winter. He has been swinging wood for about 4years for winter
