Tough to pick a favorite in this field but I think Wills Park is playing the best baseball right now so I'll take those Warriors to knock off the NC Warriors in the ship. |

Are they going to raise the pitching limits for this tournament? You could go into the losers bracket and play up to 10 bracket play games. Even if you stay in the winners bracket you could play up to 7 bracket play games. Triple Crown pitching limits are already low as it is. They need to raise the limit for this one. |

Why did they change the bracket format this year to double elimination from the Gold & Silver last year?? I hope they communicated this in advance to the teams entered. Because of this format, there are only 5 teams capable of winning the tournament: ECB Yankees, North Cobb, Wills Park, 643DP and Covington. |

Pools are out and look every random, pools A,E and F look very tough while B,C and D look like a much easier road to the weekend.

Good point. If they don't increase the innings limit, and a team ends up playing the 2 pool games plus 10 bracket games as you mentioned, that team will have used up ALL the allowed innings for at least 8 pitchers. I don't know of many teams that have 8 viable starters. I guess the moral of this story is "Don't play yourself into the loser's bracket." |

Centerfield - I don't think they communicated this advance. I would bet a lot of teams would not have entered had the single bracket been communicated. This is like the Grand in PC. The Sunday 10:00 am Championship is a bit unusual. |

10U baseball shouldn't be playing a min of 7 games in a weekend to win a tournament and that's if you go undefeated in bracket play, you lose a game and hold on you will be playing a lot of baseball to even sniff the ship. Not to mention it's JUNE in GA and looks like 90 plus all weekend, I hope all the coaches will be keeping a close eye and rotating their catchers. Now the pool games don't mean as much without a gold/silver bracket. It will be interesting to see if anyone pitches their top kids in pool play with the TC pitch limits.
Bubbasdad, looking at the pools I might be riding with your NC Warriors pick now. |

Ermmmm....Maybe I'm missing something, but my schedule says that the finals are at 5pm and/or 7pm if needed on Sunday.

Are they? You may have to explain that one to me. I'd say a 20 team field is pretty good. Most of the teams that are missing in this one compared to some of the larger TC tourneys are either teams from out of state, or from areas in GA that are so far away from Cumming that they may as well be out of state. The Yard Dogs, Longhorns, RBF are 3 biggies that decided not to play for whatever reason, but the majority of the top 20 teams are going to be there. |

Maybe it would have been better to forgo the pool play games and go straight into double elimination like they did last year in the USSSA states. I suppose the bracket draw would have to be random though, since TC doesn't have a point system to use for seeding the teams....

So the question is: does the team that has the deepest pitching staff have the best chance in a double elimination tournament or is it the team that can score the most runs. The Longhorns have the deepest pitching staff, but in their absence I think there's more of a premium on runs scored. I would put my money on the team that can score lots of runs to protect the back half of their pitching staff. |

Correct me if I am wrong, but if a pitcher toes the rubber it is an inning? Whether it is 1 or 3 outs it is still an inning. That is the way I read it. Makes you think about bringing in a kid to get that last out in a tight spot. 1 pitch could be an entire inning counted against his total. |

Pitching Rules (Innings per Tournament):
8s = 6 innings 9s = 6 innings 10s = 6 innings 11s = 6 innings 12s = 6 innings 13s = 7 innings 14s = 7innings 15s = 8 innings 16s = 8 innings 18s = 8 innings
****One additional inning per game, per player starting in a team’s 5th game played****
If you play 12 games, every player on the team has 14 innings for the tournament - although that might be borderline child abuse for 10 year olds in a weekend.
The keys to winning are 1) don't lose early in bracket and 2) win big in 3 or 4 innings to save your pitching.

Hillio - you are correct. The championship is at 5:00, so many games I missed a bracket.
Why not just have a draw for seeding, that would cut out pool play. A little late for that though. |

I was sent an e-mail regarding this post and thought that I would just comment on this just once. I will not comment any further or answer any questions from the posts after I comment.
The reason behind the GEORGIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS is to allow the 2 pool games and then go to a straight double elimination format to give all of the teams a fair shake for their dollar. It is a 4 game minimum and wanted everyone to see the value in playing Triple Crown Baseball. You will not see this unique format with any other organization. Is it a lot of games in one weekend???? The answer is YES! Why???? So that you can find situations to get all of your kids on your team an opportunity to play as much baseball as possible. Does this make for a true STATE CHAMPION??? My answer is YES! I believe the best team is who is deepest on the mound and can supply enough offense in each game! What better way to determine WHO IS THE BEST???? I have heard all of the complaints on how we determine pool play. Does pool play really matter in this one???? I do not think so. Here is the opportunities to try out some of those pitchers you would never throw in tournament situations (during pool play!). Coaches will probably get some surprises that they never even knew about!
The main complaint on this post is the PITCHING! I considered increasing the pitching limit, but I can't have peace of mind knowing that there will be some coaches that will take advantage of these young arms and risk injuring kids. I am sorry for all of you who do not understand, but Triple Crown has these pitching limits in place to protect the kids. We have seen too many coaches overuse these arms. We have even thought of going one step further and implement pitch limits, but it would be very difficult to monitor each field for each game. The strict pitching limits also puts emphasis on the strategy of the game with the coach. How am I going to use these pitchers in these situations???? What can I use to get by this game???? When do I throw my stud??? When does the number 2 and number 3 pitchers throw???? All of these factors also help determine who will prevail in these games.
Great story and true life situation last season at the GA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in the 11u bracket. Same format and real close to the same number of teams. Holly Springs Express with Bradley Fitzgerald and Curt Gehl. Played their 2 pool games Friday. Lost early in bracket play and had to play all the way through the losers bracket. Played like 6 games in a row to make the championship! Those kids showed a lot of heart and their team never once complained about being at the baseball field. Bradley and Curt both called me to tell me that it was the most enjoyable and rewarding experience they had ever been a part of. Moral of the story is don't knock it until you have tried it!
I hope that everyone has an enjoyable weekend! It will be VERY HOT! Please take the necessary precautions to get your kids hydrated today for tomorrow's games. Don't wait until the game!
Take care and thank you for making Triple Crown Baseball one of the best in the state of GEORGIA!

Agree bbnutz...pool A teams are going to have to fight for a win or risk a low seed. Suspect 643 and Wills Park won't put too much into their match-up as long as they both win their other game. Sting may have to use a little pitching but should be alright. North Cobb should have a real fresh pitching staff going into bracket. I'm sure most wish they drew into pools B or C. |

Of course it matters. If you are a low seed, you will play the top teams right off the bat. Easy for you to say because you're not coaching a team in this tourney. All you are is the director. |

With all due respect to the tournament director, asking kids to play more than 3 or 4 games in one day in 90+ degree heat is borderline abusive. Double elimination is not necessarily a bad format - IF an appropriate number of days are allotted for the tournament. To come out of the bottom of the losers bracket in this tournament, a team would have to win 6 consecutive games on Sunday - that is absurd. This tournament needs another day to play this format.
Essentially, these tournaments become single elimination with consolation games. The team that survives the losers bracket makes it to the championship completely exhausted with no pitching, while the team from the winners side is rested and in great shape pitching-wise. This normally means a blowout in the ship. In the example given by the TD from last year, Holly Springs Express (playing their 5th consecutive game of the day) lost 14 - 0 in the "state" championship to the Bandits who were playing in only their 3rd game of the day (non-consecutive with a 4 hour break).
Don't we all want to see a competitive state championship game ? |

I do not have a dog in this fight, but the director's comments are a bit disturbing. If pool play does not matter in your tournament, then you should be setting up a tourney where it DOES matter. If you have guaranteed 4 games, why not make it 3 pool games followed by seeding the teams for a gold and silver bracket? The brackets can then be single elimination. I think the ultimate goal of all tournaments is to watch the best of the best eventually fight it out at reasonably the same strength and not watching their 6th, 7th or 8th best pitchers on the mound. Just does not make any sense to me... |

I think that Tournament was fair shake for all the teams. If there was 2 pool games and a gold and silver bracket all of you would be compaining about that set up as well. This tourny gave all of the middle of the road teams a chance to show what they got and that is waht happened. I saw upsets against top teams by middle of the road temas because it was a situation where they couldntt use their top pitching every game. Am I wrong, but was it this same format a few years ago in every Dizzy Dean All Star Tournament at the end of rec-ball. Hats off to TC for this great tournament. Am I sun drained and wore slap out fro three days of this and sitting home right now typing because we"re down, yes I am but it was still a great weekend for our boys who normally only get to play 3 to 4 games a weekend. |

I agree with UGA12. I like the double elimination format and wish more tourn. had that format. As a member of last years Holly Springs Express our team loved playing 5 back to back games to get to the ship... yes we got spanked by the Bandits but everyone seems to, the difference is ours was in the championship game!!! You are not going to please everyone... if you start earlier in the week people will complain about missing work or that this team had 2 days in between games to rest and so on!! Simple fact is fairly simple, if you don't like the format don't play in the tourn. |
